IndiGo to launch direct flights to 10 new international cities, including London and Athens
In a major international expansion, IndiGo will start direct flights to 10 new overseas destinations this financial year, including London and Athens, airline CEO Pieter Elbers said. The move will take the carrier’s global network from 40 to 50 international destinations in just one year.
IndiGo’s upcoming international expansion will include new routes to Amsterdam (Netherlands), Manchester (UK), Copenhagen (Denmark), Siem Reap (Cambodia), and four destinations in Central Asia.
“There is tremendous opportunity in Indian aviation, where surging demand is being matched by rapid infrastructure growth,” CEO Pieter Elbers said during a press briefing.
Starting July, IndiGo will launch direct flights from Mumbai to Manchester and Amsterdam using leased Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The Manchester route will also mark IndiGo’s entry into long-haul operations.
With annual revenues of $10 billion, IndiGo currently flies to over 90 domestic and 40 international destinations, operating more than 2,300 flights daily with a fleet of over 430 aircraft.
Elbers said that 90% of India’s population now lives within reach of an airport connected by IndiGo, underscoring the airline’s growing domestic and international footprint. For FY25, the airline is targeting over 100 new routes, connecting 40 international destinations and 20 Indian cities as part of its aggressive expansion strategy. “India is in a hurry—and so is IndiGo,” Elbers remarked.
IndiGo currently welcomes over 1 million customers every three days and takes pride in its inclusive workforce, boasting the highest number of female pilots in India and a strong LGBTQ+ community within its ranks.
Commenting on the regulatory challenges with reference to Turkey, Elbers said, “We work within the regulatory framework and will adjust accordingly.” IndiGo is closely watching how aviation diplomacy and bilateral agreements evolve.
