Earlier this week, WestJet announced nine more US routes. They build on multiple additions by others, such as Porter from Ottawa to Boston and Newark, Lynx Air from Calgary to Phoenix, Air Canada from Montreal to New York JFK and New Orleans, JetBlue between Boston and Vancouver – and various others. They contribute to Canada-US being the world’s third-largest international country pair this April to June, behind only the UK to Spain and the US to Mexico.
Canada to the US: a summary
Between April and June, there are 4.4 million departing seats for sale from Canada to its southerly neighbor, according to the latest Cirium data (double for both ways). However, despite the entrance of Flair, Canada Jetlines, JetBlue, and Lynx Air, the market remains down by 10% versus April-June 2019. It is mainly because of the yet-to-recover Air Canada (-9%), WestJet (-23%, somewhat offset at the Group level by Swoop’s growth), United (-14%), Delta (-29%), and Alaska (-47%).
Typically, 441 flights a day
Despite the continuing recovery, there are still an average of 441 transborder departures daily in Q2 2023, with 318 routes and 207 airport pairs (i.e., where airlines are stripped out). They’re shown on the following map, although the network intensity means it is hard to read. Not surprisingly, Toronto Pearson to New York LaGuardia, 357 miles (574 km) apart, is the most served. It has an average of 24 daily flights.

20 Canadian airports, 58 in the US
Twenty Canadian airports have US flights. Obviously, Toronto Pearson is number one: it has 41% of departures to the US. In contrast, Moncton has the fewest in the analyzed three months: just a Wednesday service to Orlando International, which ends in early May.
Some 58 US airports, including in Puerto Rico, have non-stops from Canada. Los Angeles has more (8% of capacity) than any other, closely followed by Newark. The 58 airports are in 31 states. With 1 in 6 seats, California beats Florida for the top spot. Six California airports have non-stops from Canada, while six airports in Canada have flights to the Golden State.
