{"id":11662,"date":"2024-01-13T13:50:13","date_gmt":"2024-01-13T10:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=11662"},"modified":"2024-01-13T13:51:30","modified_gmt":"2024-01-13T10:51:30","slug":"aviation-sector-also-facing-shortage-of-other-airline-staff-in-growing-industry-petaling-jaya-with-new-routes-and-increasing-demand-for-air-travel-airlines-in-the-country-are-scrambling-to-expand-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=11662","title":{"rendered":"Airlines on the lookout for pilots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aviation News International &#8211; Aviation sector also facing shortage of other airline staff in growing industry<\/p>\n<p>PETALING JAYA: With new routes and increasing demand for air travel, airlines in the country are scrambling to expand and meet this challenge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sasStoryRectPos\"><\/div>\n<p>But while the aviation sector is going full throttle towards pre-Covid-19 levels, there is now a manpower shortage for both pilots and other airline staff, say those in the field.<\/p>\n<p>This shortage has not reached critical levels yet and is due to retirements and previous layoffs during the lockdowns, alongside the fast growth rate of the sector post-pandemic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inlineAd\"><\/div>\n<p>Malaysian Pilots Association president Captain Prof Ab Manan Mansor said there was increasing demand for aviation personnel, especially pilots.<\/p>\n<p>He said there was at least a 20% increase compared to 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 24px; font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/business\/business-news\/2024\/01\/10\/experience-resort-living-at-bangsar-hill-park\" data-list-type=\"Story Inline Recommendation\" data-list-position=\"1\" data-content-type=\"Article\" data-content-title=\"Experience resort living at Bangsar Hill Park\" data-content-id=\"1258398\" data-content-category=\"Business\/Business News\" data-content-author=\"NA\" data-content-sp=\"Bangsar Hill Park Development Sdn Bhd\">Experience resort living at Bangsar Hill Park<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a high demand for pilots both regionally and in the Middle East. The four-year lapse saw many pilots not being trained due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis resulted in the industry not being able to fill the gap by those who had gone into retirement,\u201d said Ab Manan, who is also University College of Aviation Malaysia chairman.<\/p>\n<p>The demand for other aviation personnel, especially those in the engineering sector, is also increasing, Ab Manan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe region, especially Singapore, has become a hub for maintenance repair and overhaul, and they are looking for personnel from Malaysia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ab Manan said there is also increased demand for cabin crew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAirlines need cabin crew before the aircraft can fly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pilot at a domestic airline who wanted to be known only as Sebastian said the shortage was due to airlines accelerating towards pre-pandemic times.<\/p>\n<p>He also attributed the shortage to instances where senior pilots retired when there were restrictions on travel while others had to be laid off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are definitely not enough pilots especially with flight frequencies increasing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sebastian said that whenever pilots were rostered on standby during the pre-pandemic period in 2019, the chances of being called to work weren\u2019t as high.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now, there\u2019s a much higher chance of being recalled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sebastian pointed out that he noticed more \u201cnew faces\u201d taking up airline positions and that it was \u201cvery encouraging\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a first officer at another domestic airline who wanted to be known as Wong concurred, saying the shortage mainly stemmed from layoffs during the lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, everyone is scrambling to hire, due to the various expansion plans laid out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring peak periods, the chances of being recalled for duty are also very high to accommodate flight frequencies,\u201d said Wong.<\/p>\n<p>The Malaysian Flying Academy said they consistently had a steady influx of trainee pilots across all intakes, suggesting increased demand.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy\u2019s Accountable Manager Captain Shantanu Roy highlighted the positive outlook for the industry, citing expansion plans by domestic airlines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe need for new pilots is anticipated to be a continual and vital aspect of their long-term growth strategy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the Malaysian Flying Academy\u2019s most in-demand course was currently the Commercial Pilot Licence\/Instrument Rating (with Frozen Airline Transport Pilot Licence).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost aspirants take this course as it is the minimum qualification airlines need to hire pilots,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said projections made by the Malaysian Aviation Commission and Transport Ministry pointed towards a significant growth in passenger traffic, with quarterly records highlighting the aviation industry\u2019s resilience while collaborative efforts and a promising global outlook had bolstered the aviation sector\u2019s recovery process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe above factors collectively paint an optimistic picture for Malaysia\u2019s aviation sector, suggesting a robust comeback and increased opportunities for trained pilots in the near future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the prevailing economic and political conditions in the region and globally could influence aspiring pilots\u2019 decisions,\u201d Shantanu added.<\/p>\n<p>He advised aspiring pilots to do their research thoroughly when it comes to understanding the demand, training costs, licensing requirements and career realities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFocus on building resilience, adapting to pressure, and continuously learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a pilot requires dedication, commitment and a genuine love for flying,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2024\/01\/13\/airlines-on-the-lookout-for-pilots\">https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2024\/01\/13\/airlines-on-the-lookout-for-pilots<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aviation News International &#8211; Aviation sector also facing shortage of other airline staff in growing industry PETALING JAYA: With new routes and increasing demand for air travel, airlines in the country are scrambling to expand and meet this challenge.
