I am angry,\u201d Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci told \u201cNBC Nightly News\u201d in an interview that aired Tuesday night. \u201cMy demand on Boeing is, what are they going to do to improve their quality programs in-house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United CEO Scott Kirby said that Boeing needs \u201creal action\u201d to restore its previous reputation for quality.<\/p>\n<p>The strong and unusual criticism of Boeing by airline executives follows\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-max-emergency-landing-alaska-airlines-79bc1ea98ee7fbc6edf46aff9319775b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">a Jan. 5 accident<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in which a panel called a door plug blew off an Alaska Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner 16,000 feet (4,900 meters) above Oregon, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the plane.<\/p>\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement-embed\">\n<div class=\"HtmlModule\" data-module-tracksubscribe=\"\" data-gtm-topic=\"No Value\" data-module-number=\"2\" data-main-module-number=\"2\"><a id=\"html-embed-module-e30000\" class=\"AnchorLink\" name=\"html-embed-module-e30000\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"taboola_readmore\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"embed-caption\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>U.S. regulators grounded most Max 9s the following day, and investigators are\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-investigation-ntsb-safety-airplanes-d9e28fe1a11dafe4f639268504bdb85f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">probing whether bolts<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that help hold the panel in place were missing or broke off.<\/p>\n<p>United, which has been unable to use its 79 Max 9s, disclosed on Monday that it\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-airlines-profit-outlook-loss-e2418343cf42b1efa40b4eadf6d89fec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">expects to lose money<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in the first three months of this year because of the grounding.<\/p>\n<p>Kirby said on CNBC that he believes that the Max 9s could be cleared to fly again soon, \u201cbut I\u2019m disappointed that the manufacturing challenges do keep happening at Boeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At times over the past few years, manufacturing flaws have held up deliveries of Max jets and a larger Boeing plane, the 787. Last year, United received 24 fewer Boeing aircraft than it expected.<\/p>\n<p>United has a standing order for Max 10 jets, a larger version of the Max line. However, that model and a smaller one, the Max 7, are years behind schedule for being certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. The grounding of the Max 9 jets is likely to further complicate Boeing\u2019s drive to get the new models approved.<\/p>\n<p>Kirby said the Max 10 is at least five years behind schedule and could be pushed further into the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is the straw \u2014 the Max 9 grounding \u2014 is probably the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back for us,\u201d he told CNBC. \u201cWe\u2019re going to at least build a plan that doesn\u2019t have the Max 10 in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Airlines rarely cancel orders, but sometimes they switch among various models in an order. Kirby wasn\u2019t specific about what planes United could acquire instead of the Max 10 but said the airline would talk to Boeing.
