How fast did it go?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aviation News International &#8211; Boom Supersonic took a step toward its passenger jet ambitions Friday by completing the first flight of its demonstrator jet, called XB-1, at the Mojave Air &amp; Space Port in California.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/boomsupersonic.com\/press-release\/boom-supersonic-announces-successful-flight-of-xb-1-demonstrator-aircraft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"11\" data-v9y=\"1\">said<\/a>\u00a0the needle-nosed XB-1 \u201cmet all its test objectives\u201d including reaching 7,120 feet and 273 mph. This is well short of the supersonic speeds (around 1,300 mph) at which Boom promises to eventually shuttle passengers around the world. In an email to The News &amp; Observer, Boom spokesperson Aubrey Scanlan said the company expects to perform 10 to 20 additional test flights before going supersonic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes in-flight checks of all systems, as well as multiple test points demonstrating safe margin to flutter (vibration) boundaries,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-da\">\n<div id=\"sda-INARTICLE\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While based in Colorado, Boom\u2019s future is intertwined with the North Carolina Piedmont. In January 2022, the startup jetmaker entered an agreement with the state to build\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/business\/article271654737.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:a $500 million \u201cflagship\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">a $500 million \u201cflagship\u201d<\/a>\u00a0at Greensboro\u2019s Piedmont Triad International Airport. A $121.5 million incentive package between the state and Guilford County helped North Carolina\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/business\/article263661103.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:edge out Florida;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"13\" data-v9y=\"0\">edge out Florida\u00a0<\/a>for the company.<\/p>\n<p>Boom pledged to employ up to 1,761 workers at the facility, and construction got underway early last year. The startup intends to use the Greensboro campus to assembly, test, and deliver its prospective supersonic airliner, called Overture, which it hopes to have certified for commercial travel in 2029. The company expects to\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/boomsupersonic.com\/flyby\/live-blog-overture-boom-supersonic-superfactory-construction-progress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:complete construction;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"14\" data-v9y=\"0\">complete construction\u00a0<\/a>by the middle of this year, Scanlan said.<\/p>\n<p>The XB-1 program, Boom said in a statement, \u201cprovides the foundation for the design and development\u201d for this future jet, which could carry 64 to 80 passengers at Mach 1.7, or roughly twice the speed of today\u2019s traditional commercial airliners. Supersonic flight begins at around 760 mph, depending on temperature and altitude.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, North Carolina\u2019s top leaders offered statements celebrating Boom\u2019s inaugural test flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited about this historic flight and Boom\u2019s progress toward great paying North Carolina jobs and sustainable aviation,\u201d Democratic Gov.
