The course offers a licence at a cost of HK$1 million in tuition fees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\">The new qualification is part of a business administration bachelor\u2019s degree in aviation services management, one aimed at speeding up pilot recruitment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\">University president Paul Lam Kwan-sing said the four-year programme would allow students to earn two qualifications, saving candidates HK$60,000 compared with pursuing their pilot training separately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\">The joint programme will be offered starting next academic year. Students will have the option to pursue cadet pilot training in the summer semester of their third year. The first batch of students for the joint programme is expected to commence pilot training in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\"><a class=\"BodyLink__StyledLink-sc-1uefa8x-0 dkLgjg\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/yp\/learn\/learning-resources\/article\/3256159\/deep-dive-hong-kong-key-beijings-plan-greater-bay-area-has-been-slow-integrate\" target=\"_self\" data-entity-uuid=\"fe66268b-77db-4fc6-8cd3-3ffb283d83ce\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-bundle=\"article\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hong Kong is key to Beijing\u2019s plan for the Greater Bay Area, but has been slow to integrate<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\">The programme spans 14 months and includes six months of study in Hong Kong, followed by another eight months of flight practice in the United States. Students must undergo a minimum of 142 hours of flight training.<\/p>\n<div class=\"js-reading-50-percent-completion-tracker\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen8001567_197=\"4357\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time8001567_197=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired8001567_197=\"1\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\">The course also offers preliminary interviews for trainees with the academy\u2019s four partnered airlines \u2013 Hong Kong Airlines, HK Express, Greater Bay Airlines and Hong Kong Air Cargo \u2013 to help students secure conditional job offers. Cadets must also take a two-week multi-crew cooperation course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\">Since the selection process started last September, the course has received more than 100 applications and has accepted 31 cadets in two classes. The academy aims to train 100 local cadets each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\">Academy president Simon Li Tin-chu said tuition fees could pose a challenge for aspiring pilots, but support from two banks and a finance company meant applicants could take out loans with favourable interest rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyParagraph__StyledBlockElement-sc-4sxwoh-0 hVXIcN Body__StyledBodyParagraph-sc-1cgoct-1 UAQBx\">\u201cDepending on the students\u2019 creditworthiness, the loan schemes may provide a loan of 70 per cent to the full tuition fees, ensuring that students from different backgrounds have the opportunity to pursue this course,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Body__StyledFallBackDiv-sc-1cgoct-8 cUAMhD image-inline-container\"><span class=\"BodyImage__StyledFigure-sc-19n75h5-0 eCNFdy speech-skip-target\"><span class=\"BodyImage__StyledFigCaption-sc-19n75h5-2 fcoAVE\">The new programme hopes to recruit more pilots in Hong Kong.
