{"id":13816,"date":"2024-05-22T11:43:52","date_gmt":"2024-05-22T08:43:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=13816"},"modified":"2024-05-22T11:43:52","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T08:43:52","slug":"goliat-project-to-explore-liquid-hydrogen-refuelling-and-handling-for-aviation-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=13816","title":{"rendered":"GOLIAT project to explore liquid hydrogen refuelling and handling for aviation industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Airbus has announced it will spearhead a project that will demonstrate the viability of liquid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/easyjet-concludes-first-uk-airside-hydrogen-refuelling-trial\/46420\/\">hydrogen refuelling<\/a>\u00a0and handling for the aviation industry.<\/h2>\n<p>The GOLIAT (Ground Operations of LIquid hydrogen AircrafT) project has been awarded \u20ac10.8m via the EU\u2019s Horizon Europe Programme to demonstrate small-scale liquid hydrogen aircraft ground operations at three European airports.<\/p>\n<p>The utilisation of liquid hydrogen in the aviation sector could prove instrumental in significantly decarbonising the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Karine Guenan, Vice President of ZEROe Ecosystem, Airbus, explained: \u201cWe continue to believe that hydrogen will be an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/cranfield-university-funded-69m-to-pioneer-net-zero-hydrogen-aviation-fuel\/45788\/\">important fuel for the future of short-haul aviation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe welcome the opportunity to help build the operating case for the widespread daily use of liquid hydrogen at airports.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits of liquid hydrogen<\/h3>\n<p>The drive to decarbonise the economy and enhance Europe\u2019s energy independence is accelerating the adoption of hydrogen for mobility and stationary applications.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen will be key to decarbonising short- and medium-haul aviation, advancing low-carbon aviation operations.<\/p>\n<p>As a clean and efficient fuel,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/en\/innovation\/low-carbon-aviation\/hydrogen#:~:text=Hydrogen%20propulsion%3A%20Hydrogen%20can%20be,chain%20powered%20entirely%20by%20hydrogen.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">liquid hydrogen presents a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>\u00a0and reliance on fossil fuels in airport operations.<\/p>\n<p>Its high energy density supports long-range air travel. However, widespread deployment of liquid hydrogen at airports requires addressing operational, regulatory, economic, and safety challenges, as well as evaluating the capacity and performance of relevant technologies.<\/p>\n<h3>Aims of the GOLIAT project<\/h3>\n<p>The GOLIAT project will be run by a consortium of ten partners from eight countries, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Airbus<\/li>\n<li>Chart Industries<\/li>\n<li>Leibniz University Hannover<\/li>\n<li>Royal Schiphol Group<\/li>\n<li>TU Delft<\/li>\n<li>Rotterdam The Hague Airport<\/li>\n<li>Vinci Airports<\/li>\n<li>Stuttgart Airport<\/li>\n<li>H2FLY<\/li>\n<li>Budapest Airport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project will run for four years and will explore how high-flow liquid hydrogen refuelling and handling technologies can be safely and reliably used for airport operations.<\/p>\n<p>GOLIAT will explore how these technologies can be scaled up to support large commercial aircraft and ground operations at airports.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the project will develop the standardisation and certification framework for future liquid hydrogen operations and address the economic challenges of the hydrogen value chain for airports.<\/p>\n<p>source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/goliat-project-to-explore-liquid-hydrogen-refuelling-and-handling-for-aviation-industry\/47723\/\">https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/goliat-project-to-explore-liquid-hydrogen-refuelling-and-handling-for-aviation-industry\/47723\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Airbus has announced it will spearhead a project that will demonstrate the viability of liquid\u00a0hydrogen refuelling\u00a0and handling for the aviation industry.
