Yesterday, IATA announced that while sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production will triple in 2024, it will still be less than 1% of total aviation fuel usage.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"such-a-long-way-to-go\">Such a long way to go<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/tag\/iata\/\">International Air Transport Association<\/a>\u00a0(IATA) reported that 2024 SAF production would reach 1.9 billion liters (1.5 million tonnes), which aligns with expectations but accounts for just 0.53% of aviation&#8217;s fuel requirements this year. There are 140 renewable fuel projects capable of producing SAF, which are expected to be in operation by 2030 with the capacity to produce 51 million tonnes. As investor confidence increases, more will likely emerge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/low-cost-airlines-saf-access-difficulties\/\">The constraint is the availability of SAF<\/a>. To reduce CO2 emissions by 5% by 2030, around 27% of all expected renewable fuel production capacity available in 2030 would need to be SAF. However, currently, SAF accounts for just 3% of renewable fuel production.<\/p>\n<p>IATA Director General Willie Walsh said the interest in SAF is growing, and there is plenty of potential, but the concrete plans seen to date are far from sufficient.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Governments have set clear expectations for aviation to achieve a 5% CO2 emissions reduction through SAF by 2030 and to be net zero carbon emissions by 2050. They now need to implement policies to ensure that airlines can actually purchase SAF in the required quantities.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Walsh believes incentives to build more renewable energy facilities, strengthen the feedstock chain and allocate more renewable output to aviation are needed to reach the targets. With the right policy settings, he is confident producing enough SAF to meet targets is possible, but no single policy or strategy will get the airline industry there.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-odd\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"some-iata-solutions\">Some IATA solutions<\/h2>\n<p>IATA outlined four possible strategies that would speed up the availability of SAF and enable aviation to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/tag\/net-zero\/\">meet its sustainability targets<\/a>. These include diversifying feedstocks, co-processing at refineries, incentives to improve the output mix and incentives to boost investments in renewable fuel production.<\/p>\n<div id=\"adsninja-ad-zone-div-gpt-ad-1494450502098-ccr-REPEAT2\" class=\"adsninja-ad-zone an-zone an-can-change an-zone-d an-constrained in-sticky-content\">\n<div id=\"dynamically-injected-refresh-ad-zone-div-gpt-ad-1494450502098-ccr-REPEAT2\" class=\"dynamically-injected-refresh-ad-zone\" data-original-ad-element-id=\"div-gpt-ad-1494450502098-ccr-REPEAT2\" data-current-ad-element-id=\"div-gpt-ad-1494450502098-ccr-REPEAT2-count-1\" data-refresh-count=\"1\" data-prebid-not-bidding-count=\"2\" data-floating-allowed=\"true\" data-refreshing-allowed=\"true\" data-next-ad-element-id=\"\">\n<div class=\"ad-current\">\n<div id=\"ad-zone-container-div-gpt-ad-1494450502098-ccr-REPEAT2-count-1\" class=\"ad-zone-container ad-zone-container-content-character-count-repeatable adsninja-ad-zone-container-with-set-height ad-zone-container-background-details-enabled ad-zone-container-loading-animation-enabled ad-loaded\" data-no-fill-collapsable=\"false\">\n<div id=\"ad-zone-size-container-div-gpt-ad-1494450502098-ccr-REPEAT2-count-1\" class=\"ad-zone-size-container ad-zone-size-container-content-character-count-repeatable\">\n<div class=\"ad-zone ad-zone-content-character-count-repeatable \">\n<div class=\"ad-zone-inline ad-zone-inline-content-character-count-repeatable\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1494450502098-ccr-REPEAT2-count-1\" data-google-query-id=\"CP7aoq6Jv4YDFZln9ggddMUJMg\">Around 80% of SAF produced this decade is likely to come from hydrogenated fatty acids, such as used cooking oils and animal fats. To expand the potential for SAF production, IATA wants that to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/wizz-air-firefly-sustainability-partnership\/\">widen and be certified to cover sources such as agricultural and forestry residues and municipal waste.<\/a><\/div>\n<div data-google-query-id=\"CP7aoq6Jv4YDFZln9ggddMUJMg\">\n<p>IATA also said that existing refineries can be used to co-process up to 5% of approved renewable feedstocks alongside the crude oil streams.
