We have an appetite for more. We are committing to that on the basis that there would be an economic return to that investment, which, if you add it all, is well over $100 billion. If the rug is pulled out from under us, and if we can&#8217;t fly those aircraft, we will not take those planes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson\u2019s comments came days after\u00a0<a class=\"semibold blue artInLink\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/emirates-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-ga-label=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/emirates-president\">Emirates president<\/a>\u00a0Tim\u00a0<a class=\"semibold blue artInLink\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/clark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-ga-label=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/clark\">Clark<\/a>\u00a0said the Indian government\u2019s move to restrict foreign carriers will leave Indian air passengers with fewer choices on international routes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell that it will not work in the long run. It will be detrimental to India\u2019s own economy,\u201d Clark said in response to a query from ET.<\/p>\n<p>UAE has sought 50,000 more seats per week to India. The last increase in flying rights to Dubai came in 2014 which allowed\u00a0<a class=\"semibold blue artInLink\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/emirates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-ga-label=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/emirates\">Emirates<\/a>\u00a0to operate 66,284 seats on India routes. However, since then there has been an exponential rise in traffic between India and Dubai and carriers can\u2019t add more\u00a0<a class=\"semibold blue artInLink\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/flights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-ga-label=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/flights\">flights<\/a>\u00a0as they have exhausted their quota.<\/p>\n<p>Travel data analytics firm OAG said Delhi-Dubai is one of the busiest routes in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson said Middle East airlines like Emirates are just taking traffic from India and transferring 80-90% of it to other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are feeding their own economy and their own hub, not India&#8217;s. So, when we are talking about liberalisation of bilateral rights, we need to talk about who is opening what to whom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But for a new airline like Akasa, there is scope to add flights on a lucrative route like Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur government is smart enough to figure out what needs to be done to protect India\u2019s future in a manner which doesn\u2019t saddle Indians with higher fares. If we don\u2019t open up Dubai for next one year, the fares will rise exponentially,\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"semibold blue artInLink\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/vinay-dube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-ga-label=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/vinay-dube\">Vinay Dube<\/a>, CEO of Akasa told ET.<\/p>\n<p>Indian airports are also apprehensive about restricting foreign airlines as they have undertaken massive expansion projects and now fear that capacity may not be utilised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAirports like Hyderabad and Bengaluru have invested in huge capitals and expanded their terminals. Indian carriers except Air India are yet not prepared to launch more international flights. The government should look at granting ad-hoc bilateral rights to foreign airlines till the time Indian airlines are ready.
