{"id":14443,"date":"2024-06-12T11:05:02","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T08:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=14443"},"modified":"2024-06-12T11:05:02","modified_gmt":"2024-06-12T08:05:02","slug":"singapore-airlines-turbulence-victims-offered-payouts-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=14443","title":{"rendered":"Singapore Airlines turbulence victims offered payouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><b id=\"singapore-airlines-has-offered-to-pay-compensation-to-those-who-were-injured-on-a-london-to-singapore-flight-that-encountered-severe-turbulence.\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\">Singapore Airlines has offered to pay compensation to those who were injured on a London to Singapore flight that encountered severe turbulence.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The airline said it will pay $10,000 (\u00a37,800) to those who sustained minor injuries,\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/singaporeair\/posts\/pfbid02oNEW6fAeqHD72YGJgGqDoG3ZCmJVNVW7RksyeRHYq9pcts96rCTRq4CbdkQ1NGm9l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">For passengers with more serious injuries, the airline is providing &#8220;an advance payment of $25,000 to address their immediate needs&#8221; and further discussions to meet &#8220;their specific circumstances&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A 73-year-old British passenger died and dozens more were injured when flight SQ 321 encountered turbulence over Myanmar and was diverted to Thailand in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Singapore Airlines has not yet responded to a BBC News request for further information on how many people will be entitled to the payments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">More than a hundred people who had been on SQ 321 were treated in Bangkok hospital after the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Early investigations showed that\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c9xx5pj095jo\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">the plane accelerated rapidly up and down<\/a>, and dropped around 178ft (54m) over 4.6 seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Passengers described how crew and those not wearing seatbelts were sent flying and slammed into the cabin ceiling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A hospital in Bangkok where passengers are being treated said there were spinal cord, head and muscle injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">There were 211 passengers &#8211; including many Britons, Australians and Singaporeans &#8211;<b id=\"\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\">\u00a0<\/b>and 18 crew on board the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The company said it would offer a full fare refund to all passengers on the flight, including those who did not suffer any injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">On top of this, Singapore Airlines said passengers will received delay compensation in accordance with European Union or United Kingdom regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The airline also offered S$1,000 ($739; \u00a3580) to all passengers to cover immediate expenses and it arranged for loved ones to fly to the Thai capital where requested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Under international regulations, airlines must offer compensation when passengers are injured or die while on a plane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The incident brought attention to seatbelt practices, as airlines usually allow passengers to undo their belts during normal cruise conditions.<\/p>\n<p>source:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\">https:\/\/www.bbc.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Singapore Airlines has offered to pay compensation to those who were injured on a London to Singapore flight that encountered severe turbulence.
