{"id":1481,"date":"2023-01-02T11:27:31","date_gmt":"2023-01-02T11:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviationnews-inetrnational.com\/?p=1481"},"modified":"2023-01-14T08:15:38","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T08:15:38","slug":"australia-helicopter-collision-four-dead-in-mid-air-incident-over-gold-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=1481","title":{"rendered":"Australia helicopter collision: Four dead in mid-air incident over Gold Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Four people have died after a mid-air collision between two helicopters near Seaworld on Australia&#8217;s Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>The nine other passengers aboard the two aircraft were all treated for injuries, Queensland&#8217;s ambulance service said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>Three passengers &#8211; a woman and two young boys &#8211; have been taken to hospital in critical condition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has said it will investigate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>The collision took place around 14:00 local time (04:00 GMT) along a tourist strip known as Main Beach, about 75km (47 miles) south of Brisbane.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>Gary Worrell of Queensland police told reporters that one helicopter appeared to be taking off as the other one was landing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"piano-inline1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>He said the four deaths and three serious injuries had all occurred in the same aircraft.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a difficult scene,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Due to the area it&#8217;s located, on the sand bank, it was difficult to gain access, to get our emergency services to the scene to manage it appropriately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>Images from the crash site show debris strewn around the area and a mangled helicopter apparently lying upside down opposite the Seaworld resort.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>The other helicopter has the popular marine park&#8217;s logo emblazoned on its side, and appears to have safely landed after the collision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>Seaworld Drive, the main access road to the marine park, has been closed off to traffic by local police.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>They urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area as first responders inspect the scene.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"piano-inline2\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>Investigators from the ATSB&#8217;s offices in Brisbane and Canberra are being deployed to the scene to gather evidence, examine the wreckage and interview witnesses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>ATSB Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell has also asked eyewitnesses who saw the collision or the helicopters in flight to contact investigators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p>A preliminary report will be made public in the next six to eight weeks, with a final report to follow once the investigation is complete, he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Gold Coast region is currently in its peak tourist season with children on their summer breaks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four people have died after a mid-air collision between two helicopters near Seaworld on Australia&#8217;s Gold Coast.
