Even though the plane landed safely and no one was injured, the incident caused concern about the\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/newsroom\/updates-boeing-737-9-max-aircraft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:safety of other Boeing 737 Max planes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"6\" data-v9y=\"1\">safety of other Boeing 737 Max planes<\/a>, leading other airlines like United Airlines to also ground their fleet during the fallout. A month later, after undergoing Federal Aviation Administration inspections,\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/faa-says-94-boeing-737-max-9-planes-inspected-2024-02-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:94% of Alaska Airlines' Boeing 737 Max 9 planes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"7\" data-v9y=\"1\">94% of Alaska Airlines&#8217; Boeing 737 Max 9 planes<\/a>\u00a0were back in service.<\/p>\n<p>Airlines\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/air_traffic\/publications\/atpubs\/aim_html\/chap7_section_7.html#:~:text=The%20operator%20of%20an%20aircraft,control%20system%20malfunction%20or%20failure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:must report all safety incidents;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"1\">must report all safety incidents<\/a>\u00a0to the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates each occurrence and recommends that the FAA bolster safety. (Data about these incidents, once reported to government agencies, is\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/investigations\/AccidentReports\/Pages\/Reports.aspx?mode=Aviation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:open to the public;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"9\">open to the public<\/a>.) The NTSB is still investigating the Jan. 5 episode, which included a two-day hearing in early August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>However, January was only the beginning of airline safety concerns this year. In March, and then again in July, two separate United Airlines planes\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/united-airlines-boeing-plane-loses-wheel-takeoff-los-angeles-lands-rcna160797\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:lost wheels and tires during takeoff;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"10\">lost wheels and tires during takeoff<\/a>\u00a0and had to make emergency landings. In April, another United flight skidded off the runway. In response, the FAA pledged to increase oversight over United.<\/p>\n<p>These incidents have left some travelers wondering about the safety of U.S. airlines or flying in general. In March 2024, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said data shows flight safety has gotten better, and flying in the U.S. is\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/united-airlines-is-flying-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:the safest way to travel;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"11\">the safest way to travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To find out which U.S. airlines have the best and worst safety records,\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/stacker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Stacker;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"12\">Stacker<\/a>\u00a0looked at\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/wallethub.com\/edu\/best-airlines\/20916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:WalletHub's 2024 report;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"13\">WalletHub&#8217;s 2024 report<\/a>\u00a0on this year&#8217;s best airlines and narrowed the data to the safety section of the study, which looked at two metrics from 2018 to 2023: 1) the number of fatal injuries in aviation accidents and 2) the number of injuries in aviation incidents and accidents. The 10 national airlines studied were then ranked from least to most safe. Southwest Airlines<\/h2>\n<p>&#8211; Safety score: 4.52<\/p>\n<p>Not only did Southwest Airlines have the lowest score in WalletHub&#8217;s safety reporting on U.S. airlines, but as of July 2024, the FAA\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/travel\/southwest-airlines-near-miss-incidents-faa-investigation-rcna163388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:placed the airline under a safety audit;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"15\" data-v9y=\"1\">placed the airline under a safety audit<\/a>\u00a0after a string of close calls on its flights. In May, for example, a Southwest flight\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/what-is-a-dutch-roll-southwest-plane-19514588.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:went into a Dutch roll;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\">went into a Dutch roll<\/a>, which is when the plane&#8217;s wings oscillate, causing the nose to make a figure-eight motion. United Airlines<\/h2>\n<p>&#8211; Safety score: 20<\/p>\n<p>In March 2024, the FAA said it was bumping up oversight of United after those aforementioned incidents involving wheels and tires lost and skidding off runways. That oversight\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-airlines-faa-oversight-flights-planes-3b7073fa7ce8aa2fd74d76977ac30fc1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:prevented United from adding new routes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"17\" data-v9y=\"1\">prevented United from adding new routes<\/a>\u00a0and required the FAA to be present during inspections of new planes to replace old ones in the airline&#8217;s fleet. United&#8217;s CEO, Scott Kirby, has\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/18\/business\/united-airlines-boeing-safety-incidents\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:pledged to refocus the company;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"18\" data-v9y=\"1\">pledged to refocus the company<\/a>\u00a0on safety and review its policies. Hawaiian Airlines<\/h2>\n<p>&#8211; Safety score: 21.73<\/p>\n<p>As of Aug. 9, the NTSB hasn&#8217;t had to investigate any incidents aboard Hawaiian Airlines flights so far this year. In fact, Hawaiian Airlines is also the nation&#8217;s oldest carrier that&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/travel\/travel-truths\/airlines-have-never-had-single-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:never had a fatal accident;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"20\" data-v9y=\"1\">never had a fatal accident<\/a>\u00a0in its 95-year history. However, Hawaiian is also quite a bit smaller than other stateside airlines. It\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianairlines.com\/about-us\/corporate-responsibility\/our-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:operates about 260 flights each day;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"21\" data-v9y=\"1\">operates about 260 flights each day<\/a>, most of which are leaving from or arriving in Hawai&#8217;i. No one was injured. As of Aug. 9, the airline has reported four serious accidents to the NTSB this year so far. In late June, the\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5atlanta.com\/news\/delta-planes-involved-4-incidents-one-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:airline had four incidents within 48 hours;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"22\" data-v9y=\"1\">airline had four incidents within 48 hours<\/a>, including an engine catching fire shortly after takeoff. American Airlines<\/h2>\n<p>&#8211; Safety score: 23.98<\/p>\n<p>Even though the FAA closely monitored United earlier this year, a union for American Airlines pilots\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alliedpilots.org\/Services\/View-FullArticle?ArticleId=12213\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:said in April;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"24\" data-v9y=\"1\">said in April<\/a>\u00a0that scrutiny could have easily been for their airline. SkyWest Airlines<\/h2>\n<p>&#8211; Safety score: 28.64<\/p>\n<p>SkyWest Airlines, headquartered in Utah, is a regional airline with nearly 500 planes in its fleet. It operates through carrier partnerships with American, United, Delta, and Alaska Airlines. The airline has had a clean record with the NTSB since the middle of 2022. In June 2023, however, airline unions\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/skywest-pilot-training-charter-flights-57b6fbe3275d84710a5b8a417b406f31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:accused SkyWest of trying to evade safety regulations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"25\" data-v9y=\"1\">accused SkyWest of trying to evade safety regulations<\/a>\u00a0for passenger airlines by operating some flights as charters. It operates about 500 flights per day and, as of early August, hasn&#8217;t reported any incidents to the NTBS yet this year. It also didn&#8217;t have any events in 2022.
