This year, Chinese travelers are projected to take 110 million international trips, two-thirds of the 2019 level, according to the China Outbound Tourism<br \/>\nResearch Institute (Cotri), which provides consulting and training on the Chinese outbound market.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<div class=\"main-column__b9c1cc32\">\n<div class=\"body-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-26\/china-to-scrap-inbound-quarantine-in-dismantling-of-covid-zero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The return of Chinese travelers<\/a>\u00a0is the economic boost that the global tourism\u00a0and retail sectors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2022-03-03\/china-s-covid-stance-has-created-a-280-billion-black-hole-for-global-tourism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been missing<\/a>.\u00a0According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dragontrail.com\/resources\/blog\/china-traveler-sentiment-report-december-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentiment survey<\/a>\u00a0compiled in December by\u00a0data and marketing agency Dragon Trail International,\u00a0more than half of\u00a0polled travelers from mainland China\u00a0indicated that they\u2019d be\u00a0ready to travel as soon as restrictions are removed, and 32% planned to travel within two years; more than half indicated that they plan to spend more on travel over the next year than they did before Covid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">But there\u2019s a caveat:\u00a0Destinations hoping to cash in again\u00a0will need to take a fresh approach that speaks to the Chinese traveler who\u2019s spent three years away from the world. \u201cThe Chinese outbound tourist will not be the same as they were before; you have to prepare and adapt for that,\u201d says Wolfgang Georg Arlt, chief executive officer at\u00a0Cotri. \u201cWe have changed;\u00a0China has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure-expandable paywall\" data-align=\"center\" data-id=\"394838664\" data-image-size=\"column\" data-image-type=\"photo\" data-type=\"image\">\n<div class=\"image figure-expandable-image__b21aa779\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Open image in viewer\">\n<div id=\"lazy-img-394838664\" class=\"lazy-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy-img__image loaded lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/igHHZYEh1mPY\/v1\/800x-1.jpg\" alt=\"China to Reopen Border With Hong Kong Gradually From Sunday\" data-native-src=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/igHHZYEh1mPY\/v1\/-1x-1.jpg\" data-img-type=\"photo\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">There\u2019s time to prepare. Chinese tourists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-06\/china-s-deep-pocketed-tourists-are-staying-home-for-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aren\u2019t expected<\/a>\u00a0to travel far in large numbers until the second half of the year. The China\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-24\/china-orders-travel-agencies-to-suspend-all-tour-sales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">group tour package sales ban<\/a>, enacted in the pandemic\u2019s early days, has\u00a0yet to lift. Prices are up\u2014way up. Visa processing will\u00a0be a bottleneck because\u00a0foreign consulates reduced staff. Major airlines will also need time\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-27\/hong-kong-searches-for-flights-to-china-soar-as-last-curbs-fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to resume flights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThere may be pent-up demand that drives more flights, but the schedules into April and beyond are still quite speculative at this moment,\u201d says Mike Arnot, a spokesman for\u00a0Cirium, an aviation analytics company. China state television reported that US and Chinese airlines have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-11\/china-preparing-to-expand-airline-service-to-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submitted applications<\/a>\u00a0to resume up to 700 flights per week from 34 countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Until then, here are five major adjustments that destinations and brands need to consider with regard to global tourism\u2019s biggest market.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Serve Diverse Travelers<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"paywall\" data-align=\"center\" data-id=\"394838801\" data-image-size=\"column\" data-image-type=\"photo\" data-type=\"image\">\n<div id=\"lazy-img-394838801\" class=\"lazy-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy-img__image loaded lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/i2a9cd_WraUw\/v1\/800x-1.jpg\" alt=\"relates to Chinese Tourists Are Coming Back. Here\u2019s What Needs to Change\" data-native-src=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/i2a9cd_WraUw\/v1\/-1x-1.jpg\" data-img-type=\"photo\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/div><figcaption>\n<div class=\"news-figure-caption-text caption\">Hiking in\u00a0Nepal, where a collection\u00a0of renovated and new\u00a0upscale lodges makes the adventurous destination\u00a0one of the best places to travel in 2023.<\/div>\n<div class=\"news-figure-credit credit\">Photographer: David Ducoin<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A mistake that will prove costly to destinations and businesses is to cling to the dated perception that all Chinese tourists are the same. \u201cAny answer to the question, \u2018What are the Chinese people doing?\u2019 is wrong,\u201d says Arlt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Sienna Parulis-Cook, director of communications at Dragon Trail International, agrees that the travel industry should better prepare\u00a0for\u00a0understanding that China\u2019s\u00a0outbound travel market is not monolithic. \u201cIt\u2019s very segmented,\u201d she says.\u00a0The first wave of long-haul travelers in 2023 will be experienced independent travelers, including millennials, Gen-Z\u00a0and luxury travelers, adds Parulis-Cook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">While some will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-09\/thailand-scraps-vaccine-proof-requirement-for-foreign-visitors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit neighboring Asian countries<\/a>\u00a0because they\u2019re easy to get to as well as\u00a0inexpensive and familiar,\u00a0others will seek new destinations.\u00a0\u201cThe game is no longer to go where everybody goes but to discover and find new places that not so many Chinese have visited before,\u201d says Cotri\u2019s Arlt.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Let Go of Mass Tourism<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"figure-expandable paywall\" data-align=\"center\" data-id=\"394838812\" data-image-size=\"column\" data-image-type=\"photo\" data-type=\"image\">\n<div class=\"image figure-expandable-image__b21aa779\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Open image in viewer\">\n<div id=\"lazy-img-394838812\" class=\"lazy-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy-img__image loaded lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/iNIalTsMO6bM\/v1\/800x-1.jpg\" alt=\"Tourists photographing Gentoo Penguin colony, Pygoscelis papua, a near threatened species. It\u00a0won\u2019t disappear entirely, but big-group sightseeing tours will probably appeal only to Chinese travelers\u00a0from smaller cities who\u2019ve never traveled in the past, says\u00a0Arlt. Residents from China\u2019s largest cities won\u2019t be impressed with the big tour approach; they will laugh at you, Arlt says. \u201cThey\u2019ve had three years\u2019 time to dream about places and read up and talk to people\u2014and look on Mafengwo or Qyer [two Chinese travel-planning sites]\u00a0for ideas of where to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Chinese social media\u00a0platform\u00a0Xiaohongshu (aka Little Red Book)\u00a0has\u00a0increasingly gotten tied up with tourism trends\u00a0for the younger market. Red Book has 200 million active users with\u00a0disposable income, mostly women 18 to\u00a035 years old. \u201cIt\u2019s aspirational\u2014a little bit like Instagram, but luxury,\u201d says Parulis-Cook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Live streaming, while not new in China, has also emerged as a\u00a0trend in tourism marketing, she adds, so showing what life is like in prospective places will prove useful. Nearly two-thirds of Chinese travelers surveyed by Dragon Trail\u00a0said their top two reasons to travel abroad are to experience local food and local life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">For less-traveled destinations, this will present\u00a0opportunity. For example, Papua New Guinea is working with Cotri to attract Chinese travelers interested in niche local experiences. Arlt says his firm is also in talks with Canada to create a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/indigenoustourism.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First Nations program<\/a>\u00a0targeting\u00a0the Chinese market.\u00a0\u201cAll this is moving towards special-interest tourism\u2014smaller groups with a higher spending,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Communicate on\u00a0Safety<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"figure-expandable paywall\" data-align=\"center\" data-id=\"394839917\" data-image-size=\"column\" data-image-type=\"photo\" data-type=\"image\">\n<div class=\"image figure-expandable-image__b21aa779\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Open image in viewer\">\n<div id=\"lazy-img-394839917\" class=\"lazy-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy-img__image loaded lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/itWFe9s22JdI\/v1\/800x-1.jpg\" alt=\"Barcelona at sunrise viewed from park Guell, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.\" data-native-src=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/itWFe9s22JdI\/v1\/-1x-1.jpg\" data-img-type=\"photo\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<div class=\"news-figure-credit credit\"><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">After pricing, destination safety ranks as second in importance\u00a0for Chinese travelers (63%), according to Dragon Trail. That\u2019s not surprising, given the horrific wave of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5947862\/anti-asian-attacks-rising-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-Asian hate attacks globally<\/a>, including in the US, Canada, Italy, Brazil and New Zealand,\u00a0since the pandemic. The safety factor will be\u00a0critical for the first wave of Chinese independent travelers before mass tours resume; the latter\u00a0at least offer the ability to feel more secure\u00a0in a crowd.<\/p>\n<div class=\"for-you__wrapper paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">More than two-thirds of Chinese travelers ranked the US\u00a0as the destination they consider least safe to visit as of December,\u00a0according to Dragon Trail. Other bottom-rankers in the survey: Israel, Peru, Chile, the UK and Spain.<\/p>\n<div id=\"desktop-in-article-2-ROKH90T1UM0Z01\" class=\"desktop-in-article page-ad paywall display\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"presentation\" data-position=\"desktop-in-article\" data-ad-placeholder=\"Advertisement\" data-ad-status=\"rendered\">\n<div id=\"bbc7777cfd233928d6a0fed7e80406ea\" class=\"bb-ads__ad bb-ads__rendered bb-ads__no_size bb-ads__size_3x3\" data-google-query-id=\"CKzHkLbWy_wCFYVFpAQdKFUF-Q\">\n<div class=\"mediavoice-native-ad\" data-mediavoice-render-injection-id=\"f547753d-e9bc-4fa9-9579-ec7c11904b88\">\n<div class=\"plr-in-article\">\n<div class=\"plr-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"plr-image-container\">\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cChinese people are very sensitive if they are welcomed or not, because they see themselves not as Mr. Lee or Mrs. Wong but as Chinese\u2014and what you do to them, you do to the Chinese,\u201d says Arlt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Discover Los Angeles, for example, formed a community advisory board to represent\u00a0various diverse groups during the pandemic, including Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI). The AAPI volunteers visited a variety of stakeholders in the city to ensure that these businesses emphasize in their communications that diverse\u00a0visitors can\u00a0feel safe and welcome in LA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Even a slight perception that Chinese travelers could be subjected to racial abuse in a place and\u00a0treated badly because they are Chinese, Arlt says, will have consequences. Chinese visits to the US\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2022-12-30\/chinese-revenge-travelers-will-steer-clear-of-a-hostile-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped<\/a>\u00a0by close to 11% from 2017 to 2019\u00a0during\u00a0the\u00a0Trump administration, which was hostile to China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Tourism boards know to lay out the welcome carpet, and hotel managers will have to be conscious about training frontline workers to receive Chinese travelers after such a long pause.\u00a0But the average resident\u2019s attitude towards Chinese people will be\u00a0more critical now, Arlt says.\u00a0Tourism boards\u00a0will have to do more marketing and education to improve\u00a0general host perceptions, in addition to communicating that they are happy to have Chinese visitors back and to factor in ways to prevent incidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThis is really a chance to make a new first impression,\u201d says Parulis-Cook. \u201cThose first travelers\u2019\u00a0experiences may have more influence on the travelers that come after them. So it\u2019s an important moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Offer Value-Packed Experiences<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Before the pandemic, bragging about big spending was considered impressive, Arlt says, but what\u2019s deemed impressive now is spending on experiences and learning by having done something, not merely flashing wealth. Value for money has become important to Chinese travelers,\u00a0especially considering the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-06\/china-s-deep-pocketed-tourists-are-staying-home-for-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased costs of travel<\/a>\u00a0and the absence\u00a0of discount tour packages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Previously popular destinations such as Los Angeles\u00a0are receiving a much greater percentage of families traveling with multiple children, as well as a shift in demand from millennials and members of Gen-Z, such as groups of friends\u00a0planning independent travel.\u00a0\u201cWhat they\u2019re looking for is\u00a0the authentic LA,\u201d says\u00a0Adam Burke, chief executive officer at Los Angeles Tourism &amp; Convention Board, who adds\u00a0that they\u00a0look\u00a0at what a local would do and seek to explore LA\u2019s neighborhoods in much more detail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Destinations and brands are eager to see tourism dollars from China return from isolation.
