The airport is looking to cut over 4% of flight movements as it tackles noise pollution, but US airlines have said they will contest the flight cap in court, arguing that the &#8216;Balanced Approach&#8217; ethos has not been met sufficiently by the airport.<\/p>\n<div class=\"an-injected\" data-estimated-y-top=\"987.8125152587891\" data-estimated-y-bottom=\"1137.812515258789\" data-estimated-x-left=\"210.40000915527344\" data-estimated-x-right=\"960.4000091552734\">\n<div id=\"adsninja-ad-zone-adsninja-ad-unit-1701375814336-60b646d9eb42f8\" class=\"adsninja-ad-zone an-zone an-zone-content-character_count_repeatable_#1 an-can-change an-injector-zone an-zone-d\">\n<h2 id=\"airlines-for-america-a4a-threatens-schiphol-legal-action\">Airlines for America (A4A) threatens Schiphol legal action<\/h2>\n<p>In a letter addressed to Dutch Infrastructure Minister Barry Madlener and seen by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraaf.nl\/financieel\/1120700809\/amerikaanse-luchtvaart-weer-naar-de-rechter-als-kabinet-krimp-schiphol-doorzet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">De Telegraaf<\/a>, A4A said that Schiphol&#8217;s plan to cut flights from 500,000 to 478,000 per year was in breach of EU and international regulations. A4A has pointed to the airport&#8217;s failures to adopt the EU-backed Balanced Approach, an ethos that looks to tackle noise pollution while minimizing operational impact.<\/p>\n<p>In December, the Dutch government announced that Amsterdam Schiphol would handle 22,000 fewer flights this year, a move that would reduce noise pollution by 15%. For example, in 2023, when JetBlue was facing the prospect of having its slots at Amsterdam Schiphol taken away, the US government threatened to revoke KLM&#8217;s slots in New York.<\/p>\n<p>As for the airport&#8217;s largest carrier,\u00a0<span class=\"display-card-hyperlink display-card-hyperlink-no-vignette\" data-id=\"255005\"><a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/tag\/klm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KLM<\/a><\/span>\u00a0, it has criticized the move as unnecessary and pointed to ongoing investments in quieter aircraft.<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-block-regular\">\n<p>The European Commission has previously criticized Schiphol for its lack of progress in meeting the Balanced Approach. This includes failing to conduct enough research into noise abatement procedures &#8211; such as navigation or landing techniques &#8211; and not fully implementing plans to roll out newer-generation, cleaner aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>As for what the airport has done, this includes raising airline fees by up to 37% to encourage the use of newer aircraft and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/schiphol-night-closure-amsterdam-airport-new-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">devising a night curfew<\/a>\u00a0on operations between 23:00 and 07:00.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-even\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"schiphol-operational-changes\">Schiphol operational changes<\/h2>\n<p>As per the airport&#8217;s latest monthly operational figures, it recorded a 1% year-on-year increase in passengers this February with 4.7 million handled, of which 2.8 million were direct passengers and 1.9 million were transfers.
