Pubgoers, on the other hand, are slightly less enthusiastic, with Wetherspoon warning that costs for pretty much everything in the hospitality industry are still \u201cfar higher\u201d than before the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here\u2019s the key business news from London this morning:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the City<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">EasyJet Plc:\u00a0Europe\u2019s second-largest\u00a0discount\u00a0carrier\u00a0said strong bookings continued into the second quarter and the crucial summer months and expects to beat the current market profit expectations for the full year, which now put\u00a0pretax profit at\u00a0\u00a3126 million for the period.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>\u201cWe have seen strong and sustained demand for travel over the first quarter, carrying almost 50% more customers compared with last year,\u201d Chief Executive Officer\u00a0Johan Lundgren\u00a0said<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Amazon.com Inc.:\u00a0Hundreds of UK fulfillment center workers plan to strike today as part of unprecedented industrial action by the company\u2019s British employees.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Members of the GMB Union working at the retailer\u2019s Coventry depot held a strike ballot in December after Amazon offered a 50 pence-per-hour increase in pay. About 98% of workers who voted were in favor of striking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">J D\u00a0Wetherspoon\u00a0Plc:\u00a0The pub chain\u2019s\u00a0like-for-like sales in the last 12 weeks were 17.8% higher a year ago, but still 2% lower than in the pre-pandemic period.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>The company also warned costs in the hospitality industry are \u201cfar higher than the pre-pandemic period, especially in respect of labour, food, energy and maintenance\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Wetherspoon\u00a0expects free cash flow to be \u201csubstantially\u201d in excess of profits, due to previously announced cash inflow of about \u00a3170 million from October 2022 sale of interest rate swaps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Westminster<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Britain\u2019s poorer regions are falling further behind in a blow to Rishi Sunak\u2019s\u00a0\u201clevelling up\u201d\u00a0pledge,\u00a0Bloomberg UK\u2019s Scorecard shows.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0Bank of England\u00a0has agreed a 3.5% pay rise for its 4,200 staff and a one-off 1% salary top-up this year under a sub-inflation deal that has been accepted by the union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Meanwhile, financial regulators would face more scrutiny over their policies for consumers and the economy from Parliament under proposals from members of the House of Lords.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Case You Missed It<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Barclays Plc\u00a0is appointing\u00a0Taylor Wright\u00a0and\u00a0Credit Suisse Group AG\u00a0veteran\u00a0Cathal Deasy\u00a0as its new investment banking chiefs in a major reshuffle of its top dealmaking ranks. The company has halted some operations in Romania due to limited profitability and has opened a base at Suceava airport to capitalise on rival Blue Air Aviation SA\u2019s\u00a0struggles. Family visits around the festive period may have given an added boost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Investors should also keep in mind Wizz Air\u2019s \u201cstrategically important\u201d Middle East expansion, which connects places like Romania and Hungary to Saudi Arabia.
