The next government will be led by CDU leader Friedrich Merz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to reduce aviation-specific taxes, fees and charges, and reverse the increase in the aviation tax,\u201d said the coalition agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The previous German government\u00a0<a title=\"raised air passenger taxes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstravelnewseurope.com\/Air-Travel\/German-government-increases-air-passenger-tax\">raised air passenger taxes<\/a>\u00a0by 20 per cent in May 2024 \u2013 drawing criticism from German travel buyer association VDR and airline groups such as IATA.<\/p>\n<p>The new coalition is also promising to \u201cimmediately abolish\u201d the previous government\u2019s policy of introducing a minimum quota for the use of synthetic fuels by airlines, known as the Power to Liquid quota, which had been due to be introduced in Germany from 2026. The coalition agreement said that this requirement on airlines \u201cexceeds the EU standard\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will ensure that European airlines are not disadvantaged compared to non-European airlines with regard to the sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) quota,\u201d said the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to shape the modernisation of the aviation industry and air transport towards fair competition and decarbonisation. The coalition is committed to improving the international connectivity of German airports to support economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stefan Schulte, CEO of Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport, welcomed the incoming German administration\u2019s commitments to help boost air travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new German government is setting the right course by reducing the air traffic tax and eliminating the national blending quota for synthetic aviation fuels that are not yet available on the market,\u201d added Schulte. \u201cThese measures can help to unlock dynamic growth in aviation again over the medium term.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-body do-highlight-share   share-push clearfix\">\n<p>Schulte said that Germany\u2019s \u201chigh regulatory costs\u201d were \u201champering our competitiveness\u201d globally. This has led to the \u201cstagnation\u201d of passenger traffic at Frankfurt so far in 2025 \u2013 during the first quarter Germany\u2019s largest hub airport catered for 12.4 million passengers, which was down by 0.9 per cent on the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other major European hubs, Frankfurt has struggled to recover fully since the Covid-19 pandemic, with passenger numbers still 17 per cent lower in March 2025 compared with March 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Schulte said that total seat capacity at Frankfurt for the summer 2025 season was set to rise by 5 per cent year-on-year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"more-from push-down-40\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The incoming German coalition government is promising to cut aviation taxes including a plan to reverse last year\u2019s increase in the country\u2019s air passenger tax.
