Residents in\u00a0Ontario<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Quebec<\/strong>\u00a0are being warned of a heavy snowstorm that is set to hit on Wednesday (Jan. 25) that will also deteriorate travel conditions at major airports.<\/p>\n

In Ontario, snow will reportedly intensify during the morning and spread across\u00a0Toronto<\/strong>\u00a0by afternoon.<\/p>\n

Snowfall rates could reach two or three cm per hour and winds will gust over 60 km\/h near the Lake Ontario shore, which will create \u201cnear-zero visibility with blowing snow,\u201d\u00a0Global News<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Weather Network\u00a0<\/em>reports<\/a>\u00a0that for many areas in southern Ontario, Wednesday’s storm will \u201cbring their heaviest snowfall of the year so far,\u201d saying that a widespread 10-25 cm is expected.<\/p>\n

The snow will taper to flurries by the Thursday morning across the GTA, the network forecasts.<\/p>\n

For areas in eastern Ontario and into southern Quebec, from\u00a0Ottawa<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0Montreal<\/strong>, 30 cm is possible with snowfall lingering through Thursday, reports say.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued\u00a0snowfall warnings for the Montreal area<\/a>\u00a0with 15 to 25 centimetres of accumulation expected.<\/p>\n

Airlines warn travellers<\/h3>\n

The warnings trigger\u00a0not-so-distant memories<\/a>\u00a0of the holiday travel season, during which a snowstorm slammed into British Columbia and Ontario, crippling airport and airline operations and impacting networks across the country.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, this is winter in Canada, and air carriers are doing their best to inform customers of what options they have if flights are delayed or cancelled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith a winter storm headed for Toronto (Pearson and Billy Bishop), Ottawa and Montreal, please check your flight’s status before going to the airport at\u00a0http:\/\/aircanada.com<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0Air Canada\u00a0<\/strong>posted to its Twitter account on Tuesday (Jan. 24). \u201cA travel advisory is in effect permitting customers to make flight changes.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a snow advisory in effect, Air Canada has revised its ticketing policy so customers travelling on an affected flight can make changes to their booking without penalty \u201cspace permitting,\u201d according to the airline\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

If a flight is affected, customers can\u00a0retrieve a booking<\/a>\u00a0to change the flight free of charge.<\/p>\n

WestJet<\/strong>\u00a0has issued a storm advisory for travel for Jan. 25-26 in regions in southern Ontario and Montreal.<\/p>\n

As such, flexible change\/cancel guidelines\u00a0<\/strong>kick in, which means WestJet will waive the applicable change or cancellation fee and customers have options for changing their travel dates (for complete details,\u00a0click here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe advise all guests to check the\u00a0status of their flights<\/a>\u00a0before leaving for the airport,\u201d WestJet says. \u201cIf you made an air-only booking through a travel agent, please contact your travel agent directly.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sunwing<\/strong>, too, is advising of heavy snowfall and reduced visibility.<\/p>\n

Travellers with flight departures on Jan, 25 and 26 are encouraged to sign up for flight alerts and check their flight status before travelling, and \u201cshould allow plenty of time to arrive at the airport,\u201d the company\u00a0wrote on its website\u00a0<\/a>on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are monitoring the weather forecast closely over the next 24-48 hours and will do all that we can to minimize disruptions to customers’ travel plans,\u201d Sunwing wrote.<\/p>\n

Air Transat<\/strong>\u00a0also has policies for delayed or cancelled flights, which you can view\u00a0here<\/a>. Customers can check their flight status\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And\u00a0Porter<\/strong>\u00a0Airlines<\/strong>\u00a0has posted a\u00a0snowstorm advisory.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Passengers can go to the\u00a0My Bookings<\/a>\u00a0page\u00a0to learn if their flight is eligible for complimentary changes.<\/p>\n

A waiver may be issued for select flights, allowing passengers to change their bookings to fly earlier or later than scheduled, avoiding potential travel disruptions.<\/p>\n

If a flight is cancelled or delayed by 15 minutes or more, a flight notification will be sent. Passengers on eligible flights will be able to change or cancel their bookings online without penalty, ‘space permitting,” Porter says.<\/p>\n

Several systems will continue to bring rounds of snow to Ontario through next week, the\u00a0Weather Network<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n
