{"id":2623,"date":"2023-02-13T12:40:39","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T12:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=2623"},"modified":"2023-02-13T12:40:39","modified_gmt":"2023-02-13T12:40:39","slug":"uk-behind-us-and-europe-in-green-aviation-fuel-says-ba-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=2623","title":{"rendered":"UK behind US and Europe in green aviation fuel, says BA chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Britain is falling behind the US and Europe in developing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/world\/uk-news\/2021\/10\/11\/cop26-uk-to-trial-hydrogen-fuelled-zero-emissions-commercial-jet-in-world-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green aviation fuels<\/a>\u00a0because of government inaction, the chief executive of British Airways\u2019 parent company said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Luis Gallego, chief executive of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/aviation\/2022\/10\/28\/british-airways-owner-iag-back-in-profit-amid-resurgence-in-leisure-and-business-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Airlines Group (IAG)<\/a>, said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak&#8217;s administration is failing to deliver on \u201cjet zero\u201d, one of 10 commitments made in November 2020 to bring about a green industrial revolution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He said time is running out for keeping the promise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Writing in\u00a0The Telegraph, Mr Gallego said: \u201cIf there isn\u2019t enough of these alternative fuels to go around, which at the moment there isn\u2019t, UK aviation\u2019s net zero ambition is put at risk,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The government wants the aviation sector to achieve net zero by 2050.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But the UK is falling behind others and risks losing out if it does not catch up, said Mr Gallego.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cBritain is being leapfrogged by the US and Europe in the race to scale-up sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, and unless we act fast we\u2019ll lose out on the huge prize this new sector can deliver for UK plc,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe government says it is chasing economic growth, that it needs to decarbonise to hit net zero and that the UK needs to keep better control of its energy supplies in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThat\u2019s exactly what creating a domestic SAF industry delivers. The government needs to get out of the changing room and join the race,\u201d said Mr Gallego.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A government spokesman said: \u201cOur sustainable aviation fuel programme is one of the most comprehensive in the world, and our \u00a3165m Advanced Fuel Fund is kick-starting its production in the UK by supporting investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"arcad_8185\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Projects include the development of lightweight batteries for small aircraft by west of England electric aircraft maker Vertical Aerospace, and the building of a zero-emission liquid hydrogen combustion jet engine led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/rolls-royce\">Rolls-Royce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Late last year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/lifestyle\/motoring\/2022\/10\/18\/all-electric-rolls-royce-spectre-revealed-on-global-stage-for-first-time\/\">Rolls-Royce<\/a>\u00a0and easyJet completed the world\u2019s first successful trial of the jet engine in the UK.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The ground test was conducted on the engine using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2022\/11\/11\/africa-likely-to-capture-10-of-global-green-hydrogen-market-by-2050\/\">green hydrogen<\/a>\u00a0produced by wind and tidal power generated in the Orkney Islands in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It took place at Ministry of Defence site Boscombe Down in Wiltshire, south-west England, using a converted Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A aircraft engine, which is widely used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The companies, which are aiming to prove\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2022\/10\/21\/green-hydrogen-investments-get-a-boost-from-soaring-gas-prices-report-says\/\">hydrogen<\/a>\u00a0can safely and efficiently power civil plane engines, are planning to conduct a second set of trials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Flight tests remain a longer-term ambition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Britain is falling behind the US and Europe in developing\u00a0green aviation fuels\u00a0because of government inaction, the chief executive of British Airways\u2019 parent company said.
