And that is exactly what a team of volunteers at\u00a0San Francisco International Airport\u00a0(SFO) is doing with the Wag Brigade.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2013, the Wag Brigade has been bringing trained therapy animals into the terminal, with the aim of making the passenger experience more pleasant and easing the stress of air travel. The initiative is organized by the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), and following a short break during the pandemic, the Wag Brigade returned to work in October 2021.<\/p>\n<div id=\"BXcnr_bvoxU\" class=\"w-rich w-youtube\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BXcnr_bvoxU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Located on the departures level of Terminal 3, the Wag Brigade is currently made up of a team of 22 dogs, cats, a rabbit, and even a pig. Accompanied by volunteers and their handlers, the animals patrol the terminal wearing \u201cPet me!\u201d vests, and will often make a beeline for gates with\u00a0delayed flights, where stress levels tend to be at their highest.<\/p>\n<p>Whether they are traveling for business or personal reasons, passengers often experience a wide range of emotions at the airport, and Wag Brigade members are specially trained to respond to different emotions. For the volunteers, it\u2019s all about sharing a bit of joy and making people smile. One of the Wag Brigade trainers, Jennifer Kazarian, reflected on the importance of the initiative, saying,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe launched as a pilot program in late 2013 with six dogs to gauge the reaction from passengers. The engagement was just amazing. So from then on we were like okay \u2013 send more dogs! We often hear people say things like, \u2018I just got back from a two-week vacation and this is the best part of my trip.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"ad-odd\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"flying-with-an-emotional-support-animal\">Flying with an emotional support animal<\/h2>\n<p>In the US, airlines are required by law to carry assistance animals free of charge, but there is no obligation for them to accept\u00a0emotional support animals.
