It notes that the airfare increases were mainly a result of operating costs going up, reduced seat capacity, reduced competition on certain routes, as well as efforts to recoup pandemic losses, adding that the increase was \u201csignificantly above\u201d the global average.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline_image  image_size_full\" data-attachment=\"93305\" data-sequence=\"1\">\n<p>\u201cThis is in sharp contrast to the financial health of airports, which are still losing money, with regional EBITDA and net profit margins being negative for the tenth consecutive quarter since 2020,\u201d the association notes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-inlinecontent-placeholder story-inlinecontent-placeholder-init story-inlinecontent-placeholder-isnotinviewport item-in-viewport\" data-storyinlinecontainer=\"1\">\n<div class=\"story-inlinecontent-placeholder-inner\" data-id=\"story-inline-item-1\" data-storyinlineitem=\"1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>ACI Asia-Pacific director-general Stefano Baronci calls out the \u201cfundamental imbalance\u201d in the sector\u2019s financial recovery, noting that despite an improvement in traffic recovery, airports were still in distressed financial health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite substantial efforts by airports to freeze or lower airport charges in 2022, the average 53% increase in airfares throughout 2022, compared to 2019, reveals a fundamental imbalance in the financial stability of the industry as well as pose a threat to the sector\u2019s full recovery in 2023,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>ACI\u2019s data shows that while the EBITDA margins of airports in the region improved \u201csignificantly\u201d in the third quarter of 2022, they remained negative. Revenue was up 65% when compared to the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<p>It notes that China\u2019s reopening should result in a \u201cgradual improvement of revenues\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-inlinecontent-placeholder story-inlinecontent-placeholder-init story-inlinecontent-placeholder-isnotinviewport item-in-viewport\" data-storyinlinecontainer=\"2\">\n<div class=\"story-inlinecontent-placeholder-inner\" data-id=\"story-inline-item-2\" data-storyinlineitem=\"2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFrom the air transport ecosystem perspective, elevated airfares represent a downside factor for full recovery as these may suppress demand and therefore reduce the number of passengers.
