Through its\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/jet-zero-council-delivery-group-2-year-plan\">2-year plan<\/a>, the council committed to continue working to speed up the design, manufacture, and rollout of zero emission aircraft and vital infrastructure at\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0airports.<\/p>\n<p>The plan sets out how the council will help to accelerate the production of sustainable aviation fuels (<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>), by continuing to invest millions of pounds in first-of-a-kind\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0plants, supporting crucial scientific research on a larger scale, and helping to drive down production costs.<\/p>\n<p>Farnborough Airport also played host to the\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/events.farnboroughinternational.org\/aerospace\/sustainable-skies-world-summit-2023\/\" rel=\"external\">Sustainable Skies World Summit<\/a>\u00a0today, which gathers experts and leaders from the worlds of aviation, government, energy, and engineering.\u202f<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0Transport Secretary Mark Harper delivered the global Summit\u2019s keynote speech, where he stressed the importance of the partnership between government, industry and academia in the international challenge to reaching Jet Zero.<\/p>\n<p>The government has also welcomed the report\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/developing-a-uk-sustainable-aviation-fuel-industry\">Developing a\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0industry<\/a>\u00a0by Philip New, former\u00a0<abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr>\u00a0of the Energy Systems Catapult and\u00a0<abbr title=\"British Petroleum\">BP<\/abbr>\u00a0Alternative Energy. The independent evaluation \u2013 commissioned by the Department for Transport \u2013 assesses what conditions are necessary to create a successful\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Mark Harper said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This government is a determined partner to the aviation industry \u2013 helping accelerate new technology and fuels, modernise their operations, and work internationally to remove barriers to progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Together, we can set aviation up for success, continue harnessing its huge social and economic benefits, and ensure it remains a core part of the\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u2019s sustainable economic future.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Emma Gilthorpe, Jet Zero Council\u00a0<abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s fantastic for the Jet Zero Council to be meeting today at Sustainable Skies, maintaining the momentum built by government and industry on our vital journey to decarbonising aviation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The 2-year plan published today, building on recent government commitments to secure demand for\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0in the\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>, will ensure we continue to accelerate progress and achieve the Jet Zero Council\u2019s objectives of delivering 10%\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0in the\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0fuel mix by 2030 and zero emission transatlantic flight within a generation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Philip New report sets out a number of recommendations to help stimulate\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0production in the\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/developing-a-uk-sustainable-aviation-fuel-industry\">government response to the report<\/a>\u00a0details the extensive work that is already underway to meet many of the recommendations, whilst highlighting what additional action could be taken to drive further investment in\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0production.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u2019s Sustainable Aviation Fuels programme is one of the most comprehensive in the world. The\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/jet-zero-strategy-delivering-net-zero-aviation-by-2050\">Jet Zero Strategy<\/a>\u00a0sets out how we can achieve net zero emissions from\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0aviation by 2050, importantly without directly limiting demand for aviation, and the \u00a3165 million\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/advanced-fuels-fund-competition-winners\">Advanced Fuel Fund<\/a>\u00a0is also kickstarting production, with 5 projects already chosen to receive funding.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to potential barriers to investment, the government recognises that many investors are looking for longer-term revenue certainty that the\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0mandate will not provide.<\/p>\n<p>The government is therefore committing to work with the aviation industry on the best ways to decarbonise, including options for additional revenue certainty for a\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0<abbr title=\"sustainable aviation fuels\">SAF<\/abbr>\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Grant Shapps said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Having launched the Jet Zero Strategy last summer, I am thrilled to now support the launch of today\u2019s new 2-year action plan to future-proof the aviation industry and accelerate the delivery of new green jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Boosting investment in sustainable aviation fuels is at the heart of these plans today, marking a landmark step in spearheading the technologies that will keep passengers flying guilt-free.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Business and Trade Minister Nusrat Ghani said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no time to waste in creating a sustainable, decarbonised aviation sector fit for the future. By working in partnership with industry, we are determined to accelerate the development of innovative zero emission technology and secure the long-term success of our vital\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0manufacturing sector and its global exports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Developing new low or zero emission aircraft technology is an important part of the Jet Zero strategy. The government is co-investing, with industry, in innovative aerospace technology, through the\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ati.org.uk\/\" rel=\"external\">Aerospace Technology Institute<\/a>\u00a0(<abbr title=\"Aerospace Technology Institute\">ATI<\/abbr>) Programme which has a \u00a3685 million\u00a0<abbr title=\"research and development\">R&amp;D<\/abbr>\u00a0budget over the Spending Review period (2022\/23 to 2024\/25).<\/p>\n<p>Through this Programme,\u00a0the Department for Business and Trade (<abbr title=\"Department for Business and Trade\">DBT<\/abbr>) has committed to fund the \u2018<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0Hydrogen Capability Network &#8211; Phase 0 Project\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Aerospace Technology Institute (<abbr title=\"Aerospace Technology Institute\">ATI<\/abbr>) this 12-month study will work closely with industry to define the operating model for a group of open access research and development facilities designed to accelerate the development of liquid hydrogen propulsion aircraft technologies, capabilities and skills in the\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>. It will also explore options for the supply of green liquid hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>The study was inspired by the\u00a0<abbr title=\"Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy\">BEIS<\/abbr>\u00a0funded\u00a0<a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ati.org.uk\/flyzero\/\" rel=\"external\">Fly Zero project<\/a>, which published its conclusion in March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This study brought together experts from across the\u00a0<abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u00a0to explore the design, technical and commercial challenges in realising zero-carbon emission commercial aviation by 2030.
