A consumer business that makes the largest slice of its profits from an increasingly environmentally-conscious global middle class doesn\u2019t want to be cast as a bad actor. Fixing that\u00a0image problem\u00a0is hard, though, because unlike power utilities and automakers, the aviation sector hasn\u2019t got a carbon-free technology on hand\u00a0to eliminate its emissions.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t stop it\u00a0saying\u00a0that such a technology exists, however. The UK\u2019s advertising regulator last week\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-11\/etihad-must-stop-running-two-ads-in-the-uk-due-to-greenwash-rule?sref=5JzLFdzD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">banned two advertisements<\/a>\u00a0by Etihad Airways after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\/rulings\/etihad-airways-a22-1174208-etihad-airways.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">finding<\/a>\u00a0the airline\u2019s claims that it was \u201ctaking a louder, bolder approach to sustainable aviation\u201d didn\u2019t stack up. The move follows similar actions against greenwashing advertisements\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\/rulings\/deutsche-lufthansa-ag-a22-1169419-deutsche-lufthansa-ag.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lufthansa AG<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\/rulings\/ryanair-ltd-cas-571089-p1w6b2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ryanair Holdings Plc.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure><img srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.bwbx.io\/images\/users\/iqjWHBFdfxIU\/idtiaVn3XM84\/v0\/piNvaTs1gp8202qz_dewi2PvPDETo3MkHBrbPW_GR81uzDParBy7STNsGox.ps98SbSu48UitGf0c\/814x-1.png\" alt=\"Flight of Fancy | Conventional jet fuel is meant to fall to less than half of total supply at European airports by 2050\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>There are \u201cno initiatives or commercially viable technologies in operation within the aviation industry which would adequately substantiate an absolute green claim such as \u2018sustainable aviation,\u2019\u201d the Advertising Standards Authority wrote in its Etihad\u00a0decision.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You almost feel sorry for Etihad. It\u2019s hardly the only carrier making such extravagant claims. The International Air Transport Association, the global industry group, is promising the sector\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/iata-repository\/pressroom\/fact-sheets\/fact-sheet---alternative-fuels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will hit net zero emissions<\/a>\u00a0by 2050 \u2014\u00a0but that\u2019s more a wild aspiration than a plausible pathway. Aviation\u2019s footprint is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-08-01\/best-not-fly-batteries-hydrogen-or-biofuels-won-t-bring-sustainable-aviation?sref=5JzLFdzD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">far more likely to increase than decline<\/a>\u00a0over the coming decades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If the aviation industry was serious about SAF, it would have no problem supporting the EU\u2019s mandate policy, because it would see a viable pathway to hitting the targets.
