Previously called the 7E7, the \u201cDreamliner\u201d was one of four choices for Boeings new widebody 787 aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving 500,000 votes from 160+ countries, the new name was announced at the Paris Air Show in 2003!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-s-in-a-name\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s in a name?<\/h2>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<p>The name was chosen in a public competition that ran from May 5 to June 3, 2003. The winning name was announced on July 15, 2003, at the Paris Air Show 2003.<\/p>\n<p>The other names that were considered for the Boeing 787 in the competition were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Global Cruiser<\/li>\n<li>Stratoclimber<\/li>\n<li>eLiner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But what we know as the Dreamliner today, may have been called something entirely different if the US had its way! The name \u201cGlobal Cruiser\u201d was seen as being too generic, while the name \u201cStratoclimber\u201d was seen as being too technical. The name \u201ceLiner\u201d was seen as being too futuristic.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the name \u201cDreamliner\u201d was chosen because it was seen as being the most appealing to the public. The aircraft was piloted by Boeing test pilots Mike Carriker and Ken Biehl. The flight lasted for six hours and 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The first commercial flight of the 787 Dreamliner took place on February 14, 2011.
