{"id":6870,"date":"2023-06-21T09:38:45","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T09:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=6870"},"modified":"2024-08-12T15:12:25","modified_gmt":"2024-08-12T12:12:25","slug":"hydrogen-powered-aviation-and-sustainable-fuel-startups-announce-expansion-plans-in-washington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=6870","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen-powered aviation and sustainable fuel startups announce expansion plans in Washington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Paris Air Show is taking place this week and the event kicked off with news from two sustainable aviation ventures that are expanding their efforts in Washington state.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeroavia.com\/\">ZeroAvia<\/a>, a hydrogen-powered aviation startup,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.wa.gov\/news\/zeroavia-announces-expansion-of-electric-propulsion-rd-facility-at-paine-field\/\">announced\u00a0<\/a>it\u2019s growing its research and development capabilities at its facility at Everett\u2019s Paine Field. The state\u2019s Department of Commerce is awarding ZeroAvia a $350,000 grant to support the work,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2022\/green-aviation-startup-zeroavia-is-building-rd-center-in-boeings-backyard-near-seattle\/\">doubling\u00a0<\/a>the state\u2019s investment to date. Last month, the company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2023\/zeroavia-and-alaska-airlines-unveil-turboprop-that-could-become-largest-green-aircraft-to-take-flight\/\">celebrated\u00a0<\/a>a partnership with Alaska Airlines to retrofit a retired plane with its propulsion system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainable aviation fuel startup\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twelve.co\/\">Twelve<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>shared\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.wa.gov\/news\/twelve-announces-plans-to-scale-production-of-sustainable-aviation-fuel-made-from-co2-in-washington-state\/\">news\u00a0<\/a>that it\u2019s building a commercial-scale production facility in Moses Lake in Eastern Washington. Twelve produces a synthetic jet fuel using water and carbon dioxide \u2014 drawing parallels to photosynthesis. It powers its process with renewable energy, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to conventional fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The air show in Le Bourget, France, runs all week and a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/choosewashingtonstate.com\/paris-airshow-2023\/\">Washington delegation<\/a>\u00a0of nearly two-dozen companies and organizations are in attendance to promote the state\u2019s role in sustainable aviation and to woo new ventures interested in landing in the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s tech that\u2019s in demand worldwide. Two years ago, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/programs\/environment\/flynetzero\/\">global coalition of commercial airlines<\/a>\u00a0committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050, while shipping companies and others likewise aspire to slash emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognize that this is going to be incredibly challenging, but it is achievable and we are absolutely determined to do everything we can to achieve that goal,\u201d said Willie Walsh, director general of the International Air Transport Association, addressing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aerospaceforum.live.ft.com\/agenda\">Boeing-led conference<\/a>\u00a0near Seattle this spring.<\/p>\n<p>Greening aviation is so difficult because no alternatives come close to the affordability, availability, weight and sheer amount of energy contained in the petroleum fuels that power most planes. Carbon cutting strategies include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/bioenergy\/sustainable-aviation-fuels\">Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>These fuels are made from feedstock materials such as waste vegetable oils, agricultural and forestry debris, crops, and sewage and dairy waste.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hydrogen:<\/strong>\u00a0This fuel can be produced from multiple sources, including water and methane, and burned directly or in fuel cells.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Batteries:\u00a0<\/strong>This option is currently limited to smaller aircraft flying shorter distances given batteries\u2019 \u201cenergy density,\u201d or weight relative to the power generated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Changes in materials and operations:\u00a0<\/strong>Boeing won a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2023\/boeing-wins-425m-in-nasa-backing-to-demonstrate-super-fuel-efficient-airplane\/\">$425 million, seven-year grant<\/a>\u00a0from NASA to develop and test fuel-efficient airplanes with ultra-thin wings. Airlines, cargo companies and others are adjusting flight plans to reduce fuel use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contrail research:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/about\/office_org\/headquarters_offices\/apl\/noise_emissions\/contrails\/\">Contrails<\/a>, the ice particle clouds created by engine exhaust, are a wildcard. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/contrail-mitigation-a-collaborative-approach-in-the-face-of-uncertainty\/?__hstc=213470795.baf2a5a25c78b8599e6ab5c38173af63.1660929747012.1686068972040.1686853440872.40&amp;__hssc=213470795.1.1686853440872&amp;__hsfp=1678199567\">Contrail Impact Task Force<\/a>\u00a0formed last year to study the impacts and opportunities to reduce contrails.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s a lot to consider. Boeing last month released a free tool called the Cascade Climate Impact Model to help companies explore the cost-benefit trade offs for different paths to reducing carbon emissions \u2014 potentially with the hope the solutions include its aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Many established aerospace interests are leaning toward SAF, particularly in the near term. The fuel can be blended with current jet fuel and used in existing aircraft. Boeing officials call SAF\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boeing.com\/resources\/boeingdotcom\/principles\/sustainability\/sustainability-report\/2023\/assets\/2023-Boeing-Sustainability-Report.pdf#page=1\">\u201cthe biggest lever\u201d<\/a>\u00a0for cutting aviation carbon. (Matt Kieffer \/ Creative Commons Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to Twelve\u2019s announced expansion in Moses Lake, the company last year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/twelve-and-alaska-airlines-to-collaborate-with-microsoft-to-advance-sustainable-aviation-fuel-derived-from-recaptured-co2-and-renewable-energy-301586420.html\">signed a memorandum of understanding<\/a>\u00a0with Alaska Air and Microsoft to back the startup\u2019s development of its technology. Alaska plans to test Twelve\u2019s fuel in one of its aircraft, while Microsoft hopes to pay for its use to offset employee travel.<\/p>\n<p>Other support is lining up locally for the sector. This spring, Washington lawmakers approved funding to create a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2023\/seattle-area-county-reveals-plans-for-world-leading-sustainable-aviation-fuel-rd-center\/\">sustainable aviation fuel R&amp;D center<\/a>\u00a0at Paine Field, and they passed a bill creating a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.portseattle.org\/news\/new-washington-law-incentivizes-local-sustainable-aviation-fuel-production\">tax incentive<\/a>\u00a0for locally produced SAF. The Dutch firm SkyNRG\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/business\/boeing-aerospace\/new-800m-sustainable-aviation-fuel-plant-planned-for-washington-state\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0in May it would build a biogas plant in Washington to produce sustainable aviation fuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf incentives are aligned appropriately, there is feedstock, there\u2019s technology \u2014 all the things that are in place to produce sustainable aviation fuel,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbon-direct.com\/people\/john-dees\">John Dees<\/a>, a senior decarbonization scientist with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2021\/this-startup-is-helping-microsoft-and-others-figure-out-how-to-cut-their-carbon-footprint\/\">Carbon Direct<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a cost question. It remains more expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While SAF has a head start in cleaner aviation, multiple ventures are pursuing alternative fuel solutions. In the Pacific Northwest that includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ZeroAvia, which is based in California and the United Kingdom and has R&amp;D operations in Everett.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hydrogen.aero\/\">Universal Hydrogen<\/a>, a California company partnering with Seattle-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aerotec.com\/\">AeroTEC<\/a>\u00a0and Everett-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnix.aero\/\">MagniX<\/a>\u00a0to develop its aircraft. In March, Universal Hydrogen conducted a test flight at Moses Lake of its hydrogen-powered electric propulsion system mounted on a plane dubbed Lightning McClean.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eviation.com\/\">Eviation<\/a>, an Arlington, Wash.-based company that successfully performed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2022\/eviation-all-electric-alice-airplane-first-flight-test\/\">test flight<\/a>\u00a0of its all-electric Alice airplane in Moses Lake in September 2022.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zevaaero.com\/\">Zeva Aero<\/a>, a Tacoma, Wash.-based personal aviation startup whose planned products include battery-powered aircraft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But just as SAF is in limited supply, so too is clean hydrogen fuel. And hydrogen is costly and difficult to transport, leading some to explore the option of producing it close to where it\u2019s used. Battery-powered flight will need to keep making progress on weight issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of good reasons to think that it\u2019s going to be a little while before hydrogen and batteries are really viable.
