There could be 300 million green collar jobs by 2050. Meet the people leaving their carbon-intensive roles behind.<\/p>\n

The world will need an army of green collar workers, from solar panel engineers to public transport drivers, if net zero ambitions are to be met.<\/p>\n

This emerging workforce is growing; by 2050, it\u2019s estimated that there will be\u00a030<\/strong>0<\/strong> million<\/strong>\u00a0such jobs worldwide.<\/p>\n

And many of those roles will be filled by people making a green transition in their own careers. It’s a shift that has been rapidly picking up pace since we spoke to oil and gas\u00a0workers<\/strong>\u00a0in 2021.<\/p>\n

Here we chat to others leaving their carbon-intensive\u00a0jobs<\/strong> behind in favour of a greener uniform.<\/p>\n

Two feet on the ground: The pilot turned aviation campaigner<\/h2>\n

Under the squeaky beams of a British pub sit 30 environmental activists. Dan Tipney nervously shuffles into the room, holding a secret close to his chest. He\u2019s an airline\u00a0pilot<\/strong>, who has been battling with his conscience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t dare say what I do for a living – I\u2019ll get stoned.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Dan\u2019s turn to introduce himself. \u201cI couldn\u2019t lie, so I said, \u2018I\u2019m not really sure how to say this but – I\u2019m a pilot.\u2019\u201d The group stop, then lean forward in their chairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018why are you not throwing things at me?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

It would be another year before Dan decided to leave the\u00a0aviation industry<\/strong><\/a>. After having seen two generations of his family take to the skies as pilots, it had been Dan\u2019s dream to follow in their contrails since the age of six.<\/p>\n

But this curious, welcoming group of\u00a0activists<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0began to make him feel like he wasn\u2019t alone in feeling conflicted.<\/p>\n

Aviation accounts for around\u00a02.5 per cent<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of global emissions, but there is currently\u00a0no sustainable fuel<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0available to meet current demand.<\/p>\n
