Aviation news international – Oman Air<\/a>\u00a0(WY,\u00a0Muscat<\/a>) and\u00a0SalamAir<\/a>\u00a0(OV,\u00a0Muscat<\/a>) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) \u201cto enhance various aspects of cooperation and develop and implement a joint commercial strategy in the field of air transport\u201d, according to the government\u2019s official news outlet the Oman News Agency.<\/p>\n

The rival carriers agreed to explore ways to coordinate their networks to create greater operational efficiency and to work on areas such as destination planning, schedules, fleet and inventory management, and managing revenue and sales.<\/p>\n

The development came just days after Oman Air revealed that it would be working with consultants at Oliver Wyman on\u00a0implementing four years of \u201ccomprehensive restructuring\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in which coordinating networks with SalamAir \u201cwill be considered\u201d.<\/p>\n

The MOU between the state-owned flag carrier and its privately-owned low-cost competitor was inked by their chief executives, newly appointed Oman Air acting CEO Nasser al Salmi and SalamAir CEO Mohammed Ahmed.<\/p>\n

Oman\u2019s transport minister, Saeed bin Hamoud al Maawali, had previously announced as chairman of the board at Oman Air the airline\u2019s restructuring. He now told reporters at a press conference that \u201cthe MoU will secure the complementary role of the two companies in making Muscat Airport more attractive through the integration of operations aimed at increasing the number of destinations reached,\u201d the Oman News Agency reported.<\/p>\n

Working together will increase the two airlines\u2019 market share to and from Oman, he added. He also acknowledged that the MOU is the first step in Oman Air\u2019s recovery plan.<\/p>\n

SalamAir chairman Anwar Mohammed al Rawas said the collaboration would \u201cimprove passenger services and avoid unfavourable competition and losses.\u201d He added that although SalamAir has a strategic plan for expansion, the company is now in the process of re-drafting following this agreement with Oman Air which gives the two carriers more room to collaborate.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0ch-aviation fleets advanced<\/a>\u00a0data, Oman Air operates a mixed fleet of\u00a0Airbus<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Boeing<\/a>\u00a0jets including four\u00a0A330-200<\/a>s, six\u00a0A330-300<\/a>s, thirteen\u00a0B737-8<\/a>s (with five more on order), nine\u00a0B737-800<\/a>s, five\u00a0B737-900ER<\/a>s, two\u00a0B787-8<\/a>s, and seven\u00a0B787-9<\/a>s (with nine more on order). It flies to 42 destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Russia, and South and Southeast Asia, the\u00a0ch-aviation capacities<\/a>\u00a0module shows.<\/p>\n

The Omani newspaper Al-Risala reported on August 10 that Oman Air was in the process of downsizing its fleet during 2023, from 52 aircraft at the start of the year to 45, a move that comes in line with its structural plan including cutting operating costs.<\/p>\n

SalamAir operates an Airbus-only fleet of six\u00a0A320-200N<\/a>s, four\u00a0A321-200N<\/a>s, two\u00a0A321-200NX(LR)<\/a>s, and a single\u00a0A321-200(P2F)<\/a>\u00a0freighter, although it also has an order for six\u00a0E195-E2<\/a>s. It flies to 47 destinations also in the above areas minus Russia, while routes in Africa are cargo-only.<\/p>\n
