{"id":8787,"date":"2023-09-26T07:15:09","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T07:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=8787"},"modified":"2023-09-26T07:15:09","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T07:15:09","slug":"stem-flights-celebrates-five-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=8787","title":{"rendered":"STEM Flights celebrates five years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aviation news international- <a href=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/2020\/06\/15\/inspiring-kids-one-flight-at-a-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/2020\/06\/15\/inspiring-kids-one-flight-at-a-time\/\">STEM Flights<\/a>\u00a0celebrated a milestone in August 2023 as it marked five years since its inception.<\/p>\n<p>The non-profit, which started as a small operation in Virginia after it received its official 501(c)(3) status in 2018, has now grown to 43 states.<\/p>\n<p>Founder and Chairman Dave Brubaker started STEM Flights to inspire young people to pursue STEM and aviation careers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my years of service in the Air Force and then defense industry consulting, I recognized that STEM jobs are being outsourced overseas to countries that aren\u2019t always friendly to the United States\u201d noted Brubaker.<\/p>\n<p>His goal was to create aviation experiences that encourage students to consider STEM careers in the US.<\/p>\n<p>As a lifelong aviator, Brubaker attributes flying to successes in his own life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you can get a kid airborne and actively participating in the flight, their confidence and motivation soars,\u201d he said. \u201cFlying can expand horizons for kids and inspire them to dream bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083581 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/STEM-Flights-03BF27C9-6831-4A71-B0CA-F7217087D95A_1_105_c.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/STEM-Flights-03BF27C9-6831-4A71-B0CA-F7217087D95A_1_105_c.jpeg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Creating more pilots is also a goal of STEM Flights. That\u2019s achieved by recruiting students all over the United States and pairing them with a volunteer pilot mentor in their own communities.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div id=\"avp_zid_34_or_33_1\"><\/div>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083582 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/STEM-Flights-265A77C5-BA1D-468C-BA8B-90251062B554_1_105_c.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/STEM-Flights-265A77C5-BA1D-468C-BA8B-90251062B554_1_105_c.jpeg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The STEM Flights team works with educators, nonprofit partners, school systems, and parents to help identify students to participate. Underrepresented and disadvantaged students are a major focus, officials noted. The flights are open to middle and high school students nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Every student must apply online, submit a letter of recommendation, and complete an online STEM curriculum in order to receive a flight experience. The student and parent (or guardian) is then connected with a local volunteer pilot mentor to coordinate mission details and set a time to meet at the airport for the flight experience. There is no cost to the students.<\/p>\n<p>After the flight, students are enrolled into STEM Flight Following, which provides follow-up resources, mentoring, scholarship databases, and STEM career exploration.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083583 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/STEM-Flights-FBB7C4ED-7C98-4459-81CC-0E9B4FD49DE4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"737\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/STEM-Flights-FBB7C4ED-7C98-4459-81CC-0E9B4FD49DE4.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Pilot mentors must also submit an online application and complete training, background checks, and meet industry standard requirements before they can be connected with a student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur volunteer pilot mentors are the heart of our organization,\u201d Brubaker said. \u201cThey donate time, aircraft, and a passion to help inspire the next generation. Without them, we would not be celebrating five years of growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div id=\"avp_zid_34_or_33_2\"><\/div>\n<p><\/center>Mentors are asked to donate four flights a year to help STEM Flights reach its student goal. Many pilots do more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur program focuses on the quality of the flight experience, not on the quantity of flights we deliver.
