Passengers would disembark the aircraft in Melbourne, but a few would remain in the terminal to make the final leg to Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/aug\/09\/ghost-flights-qatar-airways-flying-near-empty-planes-in-australia-to-exploit-legal-loophole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"11\" data-v9y=\"1\">said<\/a>\u00a0that these numbers were typically in single digits, and no ticket sales were permitted for domestic passengers to board the plane from Melbourne to Adelaide. A similar situation happened for the return leg.<\/p>\n<p>Such journeys are often described as \u201cghost flights,\u201d in which planes take off with a capacity of 10% or less.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, Qatar Airways was making these extra journeys to avoid caps that allow it to make only 28 weekly trips to Australia\u2019s major airports, which includes Melbourne. Landing at Adelaide Airport, which is not among that list, as the final destination enabled the airline to make additional journeys to Melbourne, as there were no limits on flights to non-major airports.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the situation, an industry source\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/aug\/09\/ghost-flights-qatar-airways-flying-near-empty-planes-in-australia-to-exploit-legal-loophole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:told;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">told<\/a>\u00a0the Guardian, \u201cThe whole purpose is to get to Melbourne \u2026 I mean, they weren\u2019t even selling tickets [to Adelaide] for the first few weeks. They were taking the p*** out of the industry and the laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why is this a problem?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Aviation is a significant contributor to global pollution. According to the\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/energy-system\/transport\/aviation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:International Energy Agency;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"13\" data-v9y=\"1\">International Energy Agency<\/a>, the industry was responsible for 2% of the world\u2019s energy-related carbon pollution in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>When the plane carries close to zero passengers, it\u2019s a planet-harming journey that seems wholly unnecessary, not to mention exploitative of a country\u2019s aviation laws. According to\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/46030\/pointless-ghost-flights-in-eu-cause-climate-damage-equal-to-1-4-million-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Greenpeace;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"14\" data-v9y=\"1\">Greenpeace<\/a>, yearly pollution from \u201cghost flights\u201d is equivalent to what would be created by 1.4 million cars.<\/p>\n<p>There have been similar cases elsewhere. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, many airlines were still running flights in Europe despite having no passengers in order to keep valuable airport slots.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/world\/europe\/2022\/01\/06\/ghost-flights-empty-planes-cross-europe-to-keep-airport-slots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:The National;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"15\" data-v9y=\"1\">The National<\/a>, German airline Lufthansa said it ran 18,000 empty flights in the winter of 2021-2022 to ensure it didn\u2019t lose lucrative deals that gave its planes spots at major airports.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s being done about ghost flights?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Australian Department of Infrastructure and Transport has since stepped in to ensure that passengers and cargo would be allowed on those previously near-empty flights between Adelaide and Melbourne,\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/aug\/09\/ghost-flights-qatar-airways-flying-near-empty-planes-in-australia-to-exploit-legal-loophole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bloomberg;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\">Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, it\u2019s incumbent on lawmakers to take steps to ensure this practice is discouraged.
