If you haven\u2019t, raise your standards. Treat yourself to Triple Tree.<\/p>\n<p>Sure,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaa.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EAA AirVenture Oshkosh<\/a>\u00a0is a fantastic summer showcase of the latest in general aviation aircraft, technology, education, and air shows.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flysnf.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SUN \u2018n FUN<\/a>\u00a0in Lakeland, Florida, is a spring break joy for general aviation that raises scholarships for young and new pilots.<\/p>\n<p>But Triple Tree is more like a big happy family reunion. More relaxed. More intimate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all about fun, friendship, and Southern hospitality,\u201d says Triple Tree Founder Pat Hartness, during the 2023 fly-in, which was held Sept. 18-24 at Triple Tree Aerodrome in Woodruff, South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Families bring their kids and dogs. Friends meet over cookouts to swap stories. Hangar talk ensues between experienced and new mechanics and pilots. (Photo by Jim Roberts)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognition for Uncle John<\/h2>\n<p>Pat Hartness\u2019s uncle, John Hartness, learned to fly at age 16. At Triple Tree, he\u2019s everybody\u2019s \u201cUncle John,\u201d and this year, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/2023\/07\/01\/how-do-you-celebrate-your-100th-birthday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/2023\/07\/01\/how-do-you-celebrate-your-100th-birthday\/\">celebrated his 100th birthday<\/a>\u00a0with a flight in an AirCam with Pat Derrick on June 25, 2023, at Triple Tree Aerodrome.<\/p>\n<p>That flight is featured on Triple Tree Fly-In\u2019s 16th annual commemorative plate.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div id=\"avp_zid_34_or_33_2\"><\/div>\n<p><\/center>A 10-year volunteer, Uncle John usually zips around in a golf cart to greet campers and arriving pilots. Due to a recent fall, he was wearing a neck brace at this year\u2019s Triple Tree Fly-In.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was young, I had to wring chicken necks. Now I know how it feels,\u201d he says with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>After Uncle John was honored for his dedication to aviation on Saturday, Sept. 23, Triple Tree\u2019s Executive Director Robb Williams presented a history of the property and its development into the 400-acre aviation facility of today.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083969 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA1_Joni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"921\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA1_Joni.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Richard McSpadden Jr., senior vice president of the AOPA Air Safety Institute, honored 100-year-old \u201cUncle\u201d John Hartness for his dedication to aviation. Fisher)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Williams noted that with only three full-time employees, the maintenance and year-round events at Triple Tree Aerodrome happen thanks to an army of volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Williams as full-time employees are Facilities Manager Matt Crane and Facilities Coordinator Anthony Phillips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are 278 acres of grass to mow,\u201d Crane says. \u201cThere are two paid staff members handling the facilities. Do you want to know how much grass the paid staff mows? Zero. It\u2019s all done by volunteers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers water, fertilize, and mow the 7,000-foot turf runway and campgrounds.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div id=\"avp_zid_34_or_33_3\"><\/div>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083973 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA3_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"787\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA3_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Planes line up for the 2023 fly-in. (Photo by Jim Roberts)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They also maintain multiple aircraft, a fuel farm, a control tower, eight buildings, and more than 100 \u201cpremium campsites,\u201d which feature water and electric hookups.<\/p>\n<p>Williams estimated volunteers labor for 5,000 hours each year.<\/p>\n<p>There are 11 annual events held each year at Triple Tree. Of the five \u201cfull-scale\u201d aircraft events yearly, the Triple Tree Fly-In is the most popular. The other six are radio-controlled aircraft events, including Joe Nall Week, which is the largest radio-controlled airplane event in the world.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the big events, there are multiple STEM visits from local schools, according to Williams.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083968 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA15_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"928\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA15_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">All heads turn to the sound of an arriving DC-3. (Photo by Jim Roberts)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visibile Changes<\/h2>\n<p>This year\u2019s most visible changes were rows of new sycamore trees added along the entry road to the lower pavilion.<\/p>\n<p>At the upper pavilion, the grounds between the Buehler Education Building, the Hangar, and the cookout area have been extended toward Lake Montana.<\/p>\n<p>The old fireplace was removed, opening a view and foot traffic from the hangar to the Buehler Education Building.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083966 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA3_Joni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"837\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA3_Joni.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The large fireplace at the upper pavilion was removed in 2023 to open up space between the hangar and the Beuhler Education Center. Fisher)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Thursday steak night cookout, Friday\u2019s Taste of Triple Tree, and the Saturday night barbecue were held on the newly expanded grounds overlooking Lake Montana and the lower section of the facility. The Taste of Triple Tree is a sampling of food from local restaurants and organizations.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div id=\"avp_zid_34_or_33_4\"><\/div>\n<p><\/center>Seven more luxury campsite hookups were added between Lake Montana and the upper pavilion.<\/p>\n<p>At the lower end of the grounds, more waterlilies and flowers have been added around the Monet-theme bridge on Granny Lake.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083967 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA5_Joni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"807\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA5_Joni.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Water lilies and other greenery have been added to re-create Monet\u2019s garden at Granny Lake on the Triple Tree grounds. Fisher)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And One Invisible Change<\/h2>\n<p>One invisible change this year is that on Sept. 25, 2023, the airspace of Triple Tree Aerodrome was named a FRIA or FAA-Recognized Identification Area.<\/p>\n<p>This exempts Triple Tree from the new FAA regulation requiring all Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), including model aircraft, to carry a broadcast or remote ID module. This remote ID module is like a transponder.<\/p>\n<p>To fly a remote-controlled aircraft at Triple Tree, participants must be members of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.modelaircraft.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.modelaircraft.org\/\">Academy of Model Aeronautics<\/a>\u00a0(AMA), fly the RC aircraft during a Triple Tree-sponsored special event, and maintain visual contact with the model during flight.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7083974 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA32Portrait_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1098\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/TTA32Portrait_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kids line the grass runway to watch the takeoffs and landings.
