Aviation news international – According to global broker WTW<\/a>\u2019s recent \u201cGeneral Aviation Insurance Market Review Q3 2023,\u201d world economic events are currently the drivers of the general aviation insurance market. The report found that increasing aircraft values, inflation, the Russia\/Ukraine crisis, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) programmes and emerging technologies are all impacting the price of insurance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

However, despite the challenges, the review found that \u201ccapacity remains healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

For a local perspective on aviation insurance challenges in Australia and New Zealand, Insurance Business reached out to\u00a0Sterling Insurance<\/a>, an underwriting agency specialising in aviation insurance and airport liability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Pricing challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n

IB started by asking\u00a0Sterling\u2019s director Tony Parington<\/a>\u00a0(pictured above), what he sees as the current challenges?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cConsistent pricing to sustain profitability,\u201d said Sydney-based Parington. \u201cThere is always a balance between market share, premium pool and losses\/expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He said the hard market had both driven and demonstrated \u201cthe benefits of coinsurance to help manage claim losses versus exposure.\u201d However, Parington said the recent COVID-19 pandemic also played into aviation issues by reducing full flying exposures due to the number of grounded aircraft.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He suggested that an array of rising costs are a big challenge for stakeholders in the aviation space, including insurers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cRepair costs have significantly escalated due to the effects of COVID-19 and inflation,\u201d said Parington. \u201cTransport costs have been increasing for a long while with delays in product supply and having to source parts from overseas along with shipping damaged equipment for repairs offshore.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He said currency exchange costs and inflation have added to these challenges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Are expensive airfares an opportunity?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Sterling\u2019s firm does not offer coverages for the major airlines but he suggested the much reported expense of airfares in Australia could start to have a positive impact on his agency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cLogically, there could be a bit more private charter work for us to insure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Climate risks?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In an interview with IB last year<\/a>, John Rooley, CEO of Willis Towers Watson\u2019s (WTW) Global Aerospace division, was very clear about what he saw as the biggest risk facing the aviation industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s climate, climate and climate to be honest. It\u2019s such a big issue,\u201d said\u00a0London-based Rooley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Four years ago, WTW formed the Airport Risk Community (ARC) to help manage the airport risk landscape by connecting industry professionals and facilitate knowledge and data sharing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Parington said his insurance offerings and risk management haven\u2019t changed as a direct result of climate concerns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cTypically, we are reactive and see no real changes because the aviation industry is highly regulated, both locally and globally with set standards and authorities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Aviation and emerging tech<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One section of WTW\u2019s aviation insurance market update looked at emerging technologies.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThere is also an increased focus on sustainable aviation initiatives and products such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles,\u201d said the report.<\/p>\n

However, from an insurance perspective, WTW said SAF \u201cis unlikely to present a significant hurdle given that it is in the main a modification to existing fuel types.\u201d<\/p>\n

eVTOL, said the report, \u201cis causing more discussions, but the insurance sector is adept at supporting new forms of aviation through the market as long as their testing and safety regime is transparent and well documented.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Aviation claims<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The review also discussed the impact of aviation claims apart from those connected to the Russia-Ukraine war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cTowards the end of 2022, the aviation reinsurance markets saw substantial increases to the Boeing Max losses,\u201d said the report. The WTW update said \u201cthe majority of these claims will flow through into the reinsurance market because the retained aspects of the claims have already absorbed the direct insurance proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The update said the the size of the claim means that they \u201cwill inevitably impact all sub-sectors of aviation insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Market capacity has increased<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Despite the challenges, WTW found that general aviation market capacity has increased.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The update reported that this increase is \u201cdriven by fresh insurers looking to capture market share, and existing insurers looking to maintain their positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As a result, in the hull and liabilities market, \u201ccapacity and competition,\u201d said the report, has outweighed any negative impact upon pricing from the Ukraine war and also the Boeing Max losses.<\/p>\n

However, as flight activity increases, the report said, across the market, loss ratios \u201cmay\u201d tip from positive to negative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
