{"id":9472,"date":"2023-10-24T06:10:25","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T06:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=9472"},"modified":"2023-10-24T06:10:25","modified_gmt":"2023-10-24T06:10:25","slug":"us-pilot-accused-of-trying-to-turn-off-planes-engines-midflight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=9472","title":{"rendered":"US pilot accused of trying to turn off plane\u2019s engines midflight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Air aviation news- An off-duty pilot in the United States has been charged with 83 counts of attempted murder after allegedly trying to turn off a commercial plane\u2019s engines in midflight.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot, who was occupying the cockpit jump seat, attempted to disable the aircraft\u2019s engines during a Horizon Airlines flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco, California, before he was subdued by the flight crew, officials said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph David Emerson, 44, was arrested after the plane landed safely in Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, according to the local prosecutor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>He faces 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of endangering an aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI in Portland said there was \u201cno continuing threat related to this incident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Aviation Administration told US airlines in a notice that a \u201cvalidated jump seat passenger\u201d had sought to disable the engines of the twin-jet Embraer 175 by trying to activate the engine fire-suppression system.<\/p>\n<p>One of the plane\u2019s pilots told an air traffic controller that the crew had \u201cgot the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit, and he doesn\u2019t sound like he\u2019s causing issues in the back right now\u201d, according to an audio recording posted on LiveATC.net. \u201cI think he is subdued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seattle-based Alaska Airlines, which owns Horizon, on Monday confirmed that one of its pilots had been involved in the incident, but said the captain and co-pilot \u201cquickly responded, engine power was not lost and the crew secured the aircraft without incident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Airlines use the cockpit jump seat to accommodate pilots preparing to fly a later flight to avoid bumping a passenger off the plane.
