{"id":9902,"date":"2023-11-07T06:29:05","date_gmt":"2023-11-07T06:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=9902"},"modified":"2023-11-07T06:29:05","modified_gmt":"2023-11-07T06:29:05","slug":"making-flying-great-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=9902","title":{"rendered":"Making Flying Great Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Air aviation news &#8211; aturday, Oct. 14, 2023: Driving to the monthly airport breakfast, I pass a sign on the outskirts of Madisonville, Tennessee, proclaiming, \u201cMonroe County Airport\u2026Making Flying Great Again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just hyperbole \u2014 in 2018 the Tennessee Aeronautics Commission and the Tennessee Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division chose\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/skyvector.com\/airport\/KMNV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#skyvector\">KMNV<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cAirport of the Year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That recognition reflects the achievements of Tom McCosh, who was named \u201cTennessee Airport Manager of the Year\u201d in 2019.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7084633 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/10-Airport-Sign_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"727\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/10-Airport-Sign_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Monroe County Airport sign: \u201cMaking Flying Great Again.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tom, a successful small businessman, was asked to take the helm at the airport a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, he\u2019s secured more than $14 million in state and federal airport improvement grants, resulting in the construction of a much-needed parallel taxiway, new asphalt seal coat on the runway, and installation of new taxiway lighting and airfield markings. Ramp expansion has tripled the available tie-down space, a new large box hangar is finished, and plans are on the table for private individuals to build over two dozen hangars, many of them T-hangars, which will optimize aircraft storage at the airport.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div id=\"avp_zid_34_or_33_1\"><\/div>\n<p><\/center>And it\u2019s not just about infrastructure. When you talk to Tom, it\u2019s obvious he loves his job. Sporting his ever-present smile and a blue apron (he prepares omelets every month and has already cooked a prodigious amount this morning), he doesn\u2019t miss a beat when asked what he finds most rewarding: \u201cJust the people. There is no better group of people than aviators. Aviators are the cream of the crop in our society; their hearts are awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7084626 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1_Tom-McCosh_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1013\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1_Tom-McCosh_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Airport manager Tom McCosh sporting his trademark smile and blue apron.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As an example, he gestures toward a young girl walking past. She was here today thanks to a volunteer pilot who flew her to Nashville for a life-saving transplant.<\/p>\n<p>Tom may someday join the ranks of those aviators, as he\u2019s taking flying lessons and hopes to get his private pilot certificate \u201c\u2026if I get the time. I work seven days a week, and as the good Lord is my witness, I average 14 to 15 hours a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, he\u2019s working overtime hosting the annual airport community appreciation day.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7084631 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/7_Plane-Train_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"772\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/7_Plane-Train_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Propelled by a lawn tractor, the airport\u2019s \u201cPlane Train\u201d ran non-stop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The morning dawned with a low overcast that discouraged some fly-in attendees, but many die-hards drove to the airport.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div id=\"avp_zid_34_or_33_2\"><\/div>\n<p><\/center>Like most airport open houses, this one featured aircraft static displays, vendors, food trucks, kids activities, and airplane rides that began as soon as the sun broke through.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7084628 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3_Line-for-rides_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"713\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/3_Line-for-rides_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The line was long for airplane rides.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Festivities started with a presentation of the colors by a Civil Air Patrol cadet color guard, followed by the National Anthem, and an invocation. I believe somewhere in the background the ghost of Norman Rockwell stood sketching.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7084630 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/5_TN-Hwy-Patrol-Chopper_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"810\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/5_TN-Hwy-Patrol-Chopper_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopter attracted lots of attention.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As always there were orations by city and county officials, but today the speeches were special. Community leaders were gathered to celebrate John Luther Summit, a World War II-era Navy veteran whose home is nestled in a grove of trees on a gentle rise overlooking the runway.<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, Summitt was honored with a proclamation from the State of Tennessee, recognizing his contributions to Monroe County and his commitment to preserving its natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7084632 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/9_Mr.-Summitt_JRoberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"879\" height=\"1200\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/9_Mr.-Summitt_JRoberts.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">John Luther Summitt receives a proclamation from the State of Tennessee, presented by legislative assistant T. J. Sutton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>He recently gave the county eight acres of valuable property with a commanding view of the airport, where a community park will soon stand. The park will feature a walking trail, exercise stations, and a pavilion where neighbors can gather to picnic, celebrate special occasions, or just watch airplanes come and go.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div id=\"avp_zid_34_or_33_3\"><\/div>\n<p><\/center>Can you imagine a better use for land beside an airport?<\/p>\n<p>I spoke with Monroe County Mayor Mitch Ingram, who told me that not only is the airport an economic driver for the community, but it\u2019s a place that folks enjoy visiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur airport touches many people and places in our county, so we\u2019re excited about it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are in a major hangar project and five years from now our goal is to have a new terminal.
