{"id":9947,"date":"2023-11-08T08:30:11","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T08:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=9947"},"modified":"2023-11-08T08:30:11","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T08:30:11","slug":"air-force-reservist-making-name-in-aviation-furniture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviation-news.info\/?p=9947","title":{"rendered":"Air Force Reservist making name in aviation furniture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">Aviation news international &#8211; Kurt Eldrup\u2019s fascination with airplanes probably started with his father\u2019s service as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">That fascination followed him as he joined the Air National Guard, earned a pilots license, and now makes furniture from airplane parts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">Eldrup said he has a strong memory of an \u201cairplane junk yard\u201d his family would drive by on their way to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shawlocal.com\/tags\/chain-o-lakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chain O\u2019 Lakes<\/a>\u00a0when he was a youngster. \u201cThere were all of these relics of airplanes and we would drive by this thing every weekend. I think I was hooked,\u201d Eldrup said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">That love of airplanes led Eldrup, 55, to enlist in the Air National Guard for 10 years, from 1986 to 1996. That included a nine-month deployment during Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990. While stationed in Saudi Arabia, Eldrup worked on the ground crew for the planes that would refuel fighter pilots in mid-air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">Back in Illinois, Eldrup was based at O\u2019Hare International Airport for his National Guard duties while working in auto body repair and restoring classic cars.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"gpt-passback\" data-google-query-id=\"COjXu537s4IDFf9GHQkd1N4Bew\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/77722430\/shaw-local\/northwest-herald_0__container__\">\n<div id=\"wOdBIhnoV2CM4weP\" class=\"s2nPlayer-mCwxkcyk\" data-type=\"full\" data-cid=\"9731\" data-stn-player=\"mCwxkcyk\">\n<div class=\"player newUI hasStarted\">\n<div class=\"titleBar onHover\"><span class=\"title\">Pauline Frommer Offers Holiday Travel Tips to Save You Money and Keep You Sane<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"playlistContainer\">\n<div class=\"playlistWrapper\">\n<div class=\"playlist\">\n<div class=\"item active\" data-item=\"0\">\n<div class=\"title\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item\" data-item=\"3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">Still, he had a fascination with airplanes and their parts. He said that eventually led to opening Aviation Flying Furniture. For the past 25 years, Eldrup has taken airplane parts \u2013 from wings to nose cones to jet engine parts \u2013 and repurposed them into functional furniture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">Eldrup said his first piece was made from part of a wing his father had stored in a crawl space. While attending air shows around the region, he was given parts from a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. \u201cI made a few tables and loved them. I loved the detail work and the woodworking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">One of those first pieces is in his living room. \u201cI look at it and it is horrible. But you evolve\u201d as a designer, Eldrup said.<a href=\"https:\/\/ads.freestar.com\/?utm_campaign=branding&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_source=shawlocal.com&amp;utm_content=shawlocal_article_local\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/a.pub.network\/core\/imgs\/fslogo-green.svg\" alt=\"freestar\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 14px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 14\/14;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">Now, he has sold commissioned furniture to companies such as Pratt &amp; Whitney and Boeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">Not every piece is a table or an engine ceiling fan. Even small custom gift pieces, made from parts he\u2019s salvaged and put together for clients, is a part of his passion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">\u201cThe custom gifts show what they did in the service and in aviation,\u201d he said. One recent gift was for a man who retired after 20 years in aviation insurance \u2013 a panel with rivets and the man\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">\u201cThat stuff is the fun part,\u201d Eldrup said. \u201cIt is all custom and it is all art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">It also fuels his tinkering habit, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t do it for the money. I do it to fuel my habit of building things.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"in-article3\" class=\"shawad\">\n<div id=\"shawlocal_article_local_3\" align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__300x250 __300x250\" data-google-query-id=\"CPbV36T7s4IDFQtG9ggdd3cJKA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/77722430\/shaw-local\/northwest-herald\/thank-you_5__container__\">\n<div class=\"__fs-ancillary\">\n<div class=\"__fs-branding\">He had been working in a rented space in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shawlocal.com\/tags\/lakemoor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lakemoor<\/a>\u00a0until November 2022. That is when he purchased a building at 2902 W. Illinois Route 120 in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shawlocal.com\/tags\/mchenry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McHenry<\/a>. The building is not a storefront, but a workplace for the business.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">\u201cI never really ventured off to have a gallery\u201d for his work, Eldrup said. Most of his customers find him through word of mouth or by finding his pieces via web searches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 eJGKLK body-paragraph\">He also admits that after the work he puts into the furniture, \u201cI don\u2019t like selling it.
