PLAY Operates Its Inaugural Flight To Warsaw

The Icelandic low-cost carrier has started flying to Warsaw, one of many new destinations to join its network this summer.

PLAY has operated its first flight to Poland, with one of the carrier’s distinctive red Airbus A320neo touching down at Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) in the early evening on April 3rd. Flights from the airline’s hub at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) will operate twice per week until the end of October.

Warsaw is one of a series of new destinations to join PLAY’s route network this summer. Later this month, the Icelandic low-cost carrier will begin flying to Porto (OPO), with further routes, including Athens (ATH) and Venice (VCE) due to commence in June.

Tickets for the Keflavik to Warsaw route went on sale in December 2022, and at the time, the airline’s CEO, Bigir Jónsson, said,

“Warsaw will be a good addition to our route network for 2023. This is the fifth new destination we have announced in the past weeks. Before, we had announced Athens, Porto, Hamburg and Stockholm. And with the addition of 4 new Airbus A320/321neo´s to our fleet, which will sum up to 10 aircraft next year, we are going to make a big splash in the market and offer more people the opportunity to pay less for their flight tickets and spend more on their destinations, or as we say: Pay less, PLAY more.”

The flight schedule

PLAY’s services to Warsaw will operate twice weekly, as per the following schedule:

Flight number Route Departure Arrival Frequency
OG504 KEF-WAW 14:50 20:55 Mon, Fri
OG505 WAW-KEF 21:55 00:15 (+1 day) Mon, Fri

Today’s flight was flown by an Airbus A320neo registered as TF-PPB, which was delivered to PLAY in October 2020. The inaugural flight departed four minutes late at 14:54, heading east across the North Atlantic Ocean on its four-hour, five-minute journey to Warsaw.

According to the latest data from ch-aviation.com, PLAY has a total of five Airbus A320neos and three Airbus A321neos in its fleet, with a further one of each type on order. The aircraft seat 174 and 214 passengers, respectively, in an all-economy configuration.

Connections across the Atlantic.

PLAY operates not only as a point-to-point carrier but also offers low-cost connections across the Atlantic. Taking advantage of Iceland’s strategic location mid-way between Europe and North America, the airline’s schedules are built to allow convenient connections at its Keflavik hub, much like those of its rival, flag carrier Icelandair.

The airline only commenced operations in June 2021, but already its strategy seems to be working. February 2023 was a record-breaking month for PLAY, with the airline recording its highest-ever ticket sales.

PLAY will commence flying to its fourth destination in the US – Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) – later this month. In June, the airline will fly to Canada for the first time, with services to Hamilton Airport (YHM), 40 miles southwest of Toronto.
