Weekly Boeing 767-400ER: United Cuts Washington-Honolulu Summer Schedule

It is one of 18 mainland US-Hawaii routes for United this peak summer.

United Airlines has slashed June-August flights from Washington Dulles to Honolulu from a planned daily operation to weekly. The route will now be its joint least-served from the US mainland to Hawaii.

United cuts Dulles-Honolulu flights

A long route of 4,817 miles (7,752 km), United had intended to operate Washington Dulles-Honolulu daily between June and August, a peak summer frequency it last had in 2019. OAG data shows that it has been daily in this period for many years since the route launched in June 2012. However, it will now only run on Saturdays.

Using two-class, 242-seat 767-400ERs, it is scheduled as follows, with all times local:

  • Washington Dulles to Honolulu: UA345, 08:30-12:48 or 08:35-12:53 (10h 18m block time)
  • Honolulu to Washington Dulles: UA344, 15:25-06:47+1 (9h 22m)

Dulles to Honolulu in 2022

Booking data shows that, across all airlines, approximately 82,000 roundtrip point-to-point (P2P) passengers flew between Dulles and Honolulu in 2022, with 112 passengers daily each way (PDEW).

According to the US Department of Transportation, United’s non-stop service welcomed 52,299 two-way passengers last year, with a seat load factor of about 87%. Of these, about 30,000 were P2P, meaning that the non-stop transported 37% of the entire Dulles-Honolulu P2P traffic.

Of course, United was much more dominant than this. Given its grip on the Dulles market, booking data indicates that most of the remaining 52,000 P2P passengers connected to the carrier’s Honolulu services in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Nearly half transited Dulles

As about 30,000 of United’s 52,000 non-stop passengers were P2P, the remaining 22,000 (42%) transited Dulles to/from Honolulu. Examining booking data shows that Norfolk over Dulles to/from Honolulu was the most popular market, presumably because of the US Navy.

The rest of the top 10 origins and destinations were Honolulu to/from Raleigh Durham, Hartford, Boston, Newark, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Charlotte, Richmond, and Cleveland. These 10 had just over half of the 22,000 transit passengers.

18 mainland US-Hawaii routes

As of March 25th, United expects 18 routes between the US mainland and Hawaii this June-August. Seven hubs have flights with service to four Hawaii airports. Dulles-Honolulu is now United’s just bottom least-served route by flights, as shown below:
