According to a Google translation of Portuguese news outlet O Jornal Economico, the new route, according to Austria’s ambassador to Portugal, Christoph Meran, points out that,

“Vienna and Porto are two cities with an immensely rich history, but, in addition to culture and tourism, we are talking about an ever-increasing connection between our economies and businesses.”

The article also notes that Austrian Airlines will use their Airbus A320s as pictured above. It’s worth noting that Austrian Airlines is currently acquiring A320neos to rejuvenate the narrowbody part of its fleet, benefiting from up to 20% less fuel burn and 50% less take-off noise. Additionally, Porto, Portugal, is a city in north Portugal along the coast. In a recent statement, the airport announced not just serving, “more than 12.6 million passengers in 2022… an increase of 116.3% over the previous year” but also fourteen new routes and a total of six new airlines coming in 2023: airBaltic, Austrian Airlines, Norwegian, PLAY, SAS Scandinavian Airlines and Sun D’Or.

The in-flight experience

Austrian Airlines pledged to provide Austrian culinary offerings to its guests. From Wiener schnitzel to Apple strudel for hot foods, alongside Almdudler soft drinks plus Märzenbier [March beer] – Austrian cuisine is certainly available on board.

Also offered are in-flight magazines and WiFi via FlyNet, where you can pay a variable price depending on flight distance and the speed your need. Plus, the airline offers a quality experience with pillows, aircrew in Austrian red, in-flight entertainment in every seatback, and more.

As Trestl explained in the statement;

“Austrian Airlines represents Austrian hospitality, cordiality and top service. It is a priority for us to make the entire journey a special experience for our guests. In addition to our offered service on board, our route network is also growing again.”

Significance of March 31 as the announcement date

The date of March 31 is a significant one for Austrian Airlines. Austrian Airlines had an inaugural flight in 1958 on March 31 to connect Vienna, Austria, with London, United Kingdom.

Austrian Airlines has come a long way from flying 75 passengers in a 75-passenger Vickers Viscount between Vienna and London in 1958. The airline may have parted ways with its last propeller aircraft – the 76-passenger Dash 8-400 – in 2021 but now flies 120-passenger Embraer E195s, larger Airbus 320s, Boeing 767s, and the Boeing 777 – all with more speed and range.
